Just got back from seeing GL in REAL 3D. I give it a 7/10 as its a pretty good film and it did keep my interest and did entertain from beginning to end. It is a straightforward origin story but that's all right as it does what it needs to do to establish the character and the world the character lives in. It's got a lot of good elements and a lot of cool stuff. Reynolds is damn near perfect as Hal and Mark Strong is pitch perfect as Sinestro. It IS NOT the ____FEST that people (namely critics) are making it out to be. Trust me. I know what a ____fest is and GL is not it. Now, DC/WB needs to comeback with a sequel that exceeds all expectations and just WOWs us. We've got a good setup for a sequel if you stay through the credits and see the sequence inserted there. DC/WB needs to let Geoff Johns do what he's been doing on the GL books for the sequel and just let him take us into epicness. That's what we need--an all out epic GL film that kicks ass from beginning to end and puts this first film to absolute shame.

Wow, critics were way too harsh with this one. Just came back and I enjoyed it a lot.

I thought everything worked pretty well, except:

No back story or motive shown for Sinestro putting on the yellow ring during the credits. Seemed like a lazy ass way to set up a sequel. I hope it gets a sequel.

Did you fall asleep or something? They clearly explained it. There was that whole speech and the Guardians making the ring, etc. Sinestro's idea was to fight fear with fear. Granted, not the most logical, but it wasn't just out of the blue (er, yellow) that he decides to put the ring on at the end. Frankly, I'm not even sure the mid-credit scene is cannon. It was just there for fan reaction IMO. Sure it sets up a sequel, but it doesn't mean Sinestro couldn't take the yellow ring off again, put the green back on, and act as though nothing happened.

Honestly this film suffers from lack of a clear villian. In the comic Parallax usually takes a host and that is the target, the entity is rarely the headliner. It kind of possessed Krona but that wasn't well communicated. Hector could have been that but was underused but if this is going where I think it is then a sequel naturally wouldn't have that issue

EXACTLY!!! thats what i told my cuz, how sinestro woulda been a great central villian instead of the parallax/hammon characters.

No, I saw all that. But after all that happened, and Hal defeated the monster thing, there was nothing that would've made him put on the yellow ring. That thing was destroyed and he was proven that fear wasn't needed to conquer or win against fear itself.

If they would've given the character more depth or written him better, they could've made that little extra scene a lot more effective, than it being like - hey, look. now this guy is gonna become bad!

first time I've wanted to go home and take a nap while watching a movie. I was nodding off in the first 20 minutes. Is the character really that dull in comics?

There was maybe 15 people when I went at 3pm yesterday. Not surprising for where I live and that time of day though.

I went to the early show yesterday (10:45) and the theater was half full. I typically go the same time for each film and this was by far the biggest turn out (Thor, XFC, Kung Fu 2 and GL).

Made about $21MM on Friday - sounds like a pretty solid start. I'm thinking $60MM for the opening weekend. That should put it on good course for a sequel - albeit with a tempered budget as Mike has said

I really enjoyed the movie. Sure it brought nothing new to the table, but then, neither did Thor. It's very formulaic, but I loved how faithful it was to the characters and comic-book mythos and that's all I could ask for. Not sure how a GL origin movie could be much better.

If this same movie was made ten years ago, it'd be a hit. Now, with the market over-saturated with superhero movies, people are just bored with them. It's too bad, since I wish DC/WB would follow Marvel's example and tie their hero franchises together. I'd be very happy if MAN OF STEEL referenced the events of GL or Nolan's Bat-saga, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
