Saw the movie at the Melbourne premiere tonight. Initially, I didn't think much of the movie and wasn't looking forward to it, based mostly on character designs. It all looked very "meh." But, after seeing a couple of the trailers, I got excited and was looking forward to it. I must say, the movie surpassed my expectations.
All of the 70s stuff with Charles and Erik was great, and a definite highlight. It definitely feels like their movie, rather than another Wolverine movie. To be honest most aspects in the 70s were great, including the Sentinels, which actually looked pretty badass on screen. Yes, even Quicksilver was awesome. I'll admit, I thought it would suck and he looked like garbage based on initial pictures, but the scenes with him were fun and very well done. And the scene with Magneto and the stadium is sweet.
The future stuff is somewhat minimal, but it was great. There are a couple of big fight scenes that take place in the future, especially one at the end which involved tons of Sentinels and almost all of the mutants.
Overall, the movie was fantastic, and as I said, exceeded my expectations. I think if you're an X-Men fan and are looking forward to it, you'll love it. And even if you're not necessarily looking forward to it, it may just surprise you. I'll probably need a few more viewings to come up with a definitive opinion, but as it stands, I enjoyed it immensely and I'm looking forward to seeing it again.
Also, the movie feels like a real fresh start, and I'm excited to see where they go with this cast. The are definitely tons of possibilities.
Now for some spoilers:
We find out that Trask conducted experiments on some of the mutants we see in First Class, including Banshee, Azazel, Angel, etc. So it looks like we won't be seeing Emma Frost or the others again, as they're dead.
Stryker makes an appearance in the film, and when Wolverine sees him he gets flashbacks/flashforwards. And we see some footage from X2.
When Magneto and Quicksilver are in an elevator just after QS rescues him from prison, Magneto tells him he can control metal. QS says something like "my mother once knew a guy who could do that." Not really a spoiler, but yeah.
During the big fight scene in the future, the mutants are up against about 100 Sentinels. In the scene, all of the mutants fighting outside die, and just as Prof. X, Kitty and Wolverine are about to get smoked, Mystique chooses not to kill Trask in the past, therefore altering the future. Everyone lives, and we see Wolverine wake up in the X Mansion.
In the new future, Wolverine wakes up, sees all of the mutants we thought were dead, and then sees Jean. Wolverine goes to touch Jean, and then all of sudden, Cyclops shows up. Yes, he's alive. So essentially, this movie wipes away everything that happened in X3.
The movie ends in the past, as Wolverine is rescued from the bottom of a river after his fight with Magneto. We see Stryker, and he's asked something like "what do you want to do with him?"
Then he says "leave him to me" I think, but then we see his eyes turn yellow and it's actually Mystique.
For people who just want to know about the after credits scene:
Yep, it's Apocalypse. It starts off with a shot of sand in the desert, and we hear people chanting "En Sabah Nur" repeatedly. It pans up, then we see him in robes in front of a large crowd of people, as he uses his powers to build a pyramid, placing blocks. Then we see his face. He just had red eyes and was blue. Also, it looked kind of like Aaron Taylor Johnson just in blue make-up, but I'm probably mistaken.
