Way too many modern guys who still need to pay their dues, imho. I'm old school, and worship the legends who shaped the art of film:

1. Akira Kurosawa
2. David Lean
3 (tie). Charlie Chaplin/Alfred Hitchcock

Only True Living Legend (imho): Steven Spielberg. Scorsese and Cameron a distant 2nd behind him.

But surely you're forgetting M. Night Shyamalamadingdong?

He's aiiight. But more of a legend in his own mind, like many other filmmakers of his generation. Most of them are quite talented but ultimately overrated, imho. I include Taratino in that list. :monkey1

Akira Kurosawa
Charlie Chaplin
M. Night Shyamalan

Others of note,

Alex Proyas
Steven Speilberg
F.W. Murnau
Christopher Nolan
David Lynch
Ridley Scott
Stanley Kubrick
Tim Burton
Abel Gance
Howard Hawks
John Ford
Fritz Lang

Too many to name....

In no particular order:

1. Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street films)
2. Tim Burton
3. Peter Jackson (for the Frighteners and the Lord of the Rings trilogy)

So hard to pick just three. My list is constantly changing.

Yasujiro Ozu, Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson, Hayao Miyazaki, Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch...

Good to hear that at least 1 other guy likes Lynch`s work...:D

choose three seriously lacking respect for others , is my humble opinion . this is my list :

lucas
burton
spielberg
scorsese
cameron
scott
allen
de palma
cronenberg
fellini
kubrick
woo

I'm really shocked to see Tim Burton on so many top 3 lists.

To me, he's always been a much better art director/production designer than a director. Really hard for me to see him ranking over directors like Hitchcock, Spielberg, Lean, etc.

Check my sig:D

But my top 3 would be...

Steven Spielberg - Jaws, Close Encounters..., E.T., Indiana Jones 1-4, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan ect ect

Martin Scorcesse - Taxi Driver, The Departed, Gangs Of New York, The Aviator, Casino, Goodfellas ect

Tie: Quentin Tarantino - Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Death Proof

Tie: Sergio Leone - Once Upon A Time In The West, The Dollars Trilogy, Once Upon A Time In America

Also, favorites who didnt make the sig: Tim Burton, John Ford, Ridley Scott, Howard Hughes, John Carpenter, Michael Mann and a bunch of other's i can't remember right now.
