About 15 years ago I probably would've just said Martin Scorsese and left it at that but my tastes seem to have changed considerably over recent years (I think i'm slowly just turning into my old man)

Sergio Leone
Alfred Hitchcock
John Ford
Clint Eastwood
Martin Scorsese
(Early) John Carpenter
(Early) Francis Ford Coppola
David Cronenberg
Paul Thomas Anderson
Dario Argento

...and most underated: Richard Donner
Late 70s to late 80s John carpenter is a master, the thing is my all time favorite horror film.

My list - hopefully controversial!

1. David Twohy ...anyone? Remember his work for ALIEN3 first!
2. Oliver Stone
3. George Miller (excluding Happy Feet lol)
4. George Roy Hill / Ford
5. Michael J. Bassett
6. Ridley (and Tony) Scott
7. Zemeckis & Michael Robert "Bob" Gale
8. Mel Gibson!!!
9. Steve McQueen ... not THAT one! "Hunger"
10. Martin McDonagh (except 7 Psychopaths)
11. George Armitage

For the record:
I can't stand Spaghetti Westerns...
I'll never 'get' Kurosawa, I now detest Star Wars!
Nor will I EVER like Hitchcock (and his hidden rumpy-pumpy references)

Honorable mention to Don Seigel, he Made some of my favorite Clint movies.
Ridley Scott and James Cameron but not super into them. Nolan is good but just never been my thing, only film I really like from him is Memento.
Roman Palanski is good too.
The Coens
Carpenter made some greats.
Hitchcock, of course, amazing filmography.

I guess I could go on and on.....

Has anyone mentioned Billy Wilder, Sam Peckinpah, Samuel Fuller or Andrew V. McLaglen? Also Richard Attenborough, Robert Aldrich and the partnership of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressberger shouldn't be overlooked when you're discussing great directors.
