While I thought The Hobbit had the "best" visuals it'd be great to see Prometheus get the win for daring to build so many jaw dropping real sets and mindlbowing animatronics. Some of the practical effects were so good (like the infamous hammerpede) I assumed they were CG the first time I saw them.

Yeah, especially considering The Hobbit has two more years to show it's stuff.

Nice line up.

Good LU. I did think The Hobbit would pick up a couple more than it did. Ah well It got 3 which is better than none of course. Surprised The Avengers didn't get more than 1.

I would give best visual effects to The Hobbit for the Gollum scene alone.

And I'm not a fan of Anne Hathaway, but I think she deserved her nomination after seeing the film.

Absolutely. And I thought Azog had real presence that was quite underrated.

I see it as The Hobbit: Best ever CG characters vs. Prometheus: Best ever practical animatronics. I wonder which way the Academy will swing.

I'm still waiting for Andy Serkis to get something. He's half the reason Gollum is so great, especially in the Hobbit.

Seeing all the physical work he did for the films AND being a unit director, pretty great stuff.

I love stop motion animation, and I'm glad to see them give so much attention to those films this year. I think that all three of these underperformed at the box office, and the future of big budget stop motion features isn't very bright. Disney already cancelled an upcoming stop motion production and I don't see them starting more any time soon. Having seen all of the nominated films, my vote in this category would go to Frankenweenie.

My pick of winners.

Helen Hunt got naked for her nomination, and doesn't look that great. Well, she never looked great.

Total Recall got snubbed for Visual FX.

Love it too! You've seen Mary and Max? One of my favourite stop motion movies; was quite disappointed when it did not even get a nomination in 2009. And yes, between the two, I too wish Frankenweenie wins.

Which one did Disney cancel?
