I don't think it's bad. SD is easy to get around and there's lots to see and do, with or without familiarity of the area. Probably your best shot at getting to see and do things before the sweaty masses arrive and start stinking up every last venue.

Thought I'd revive this thread with a lil note... I registered yesterday for SDCC '09 after seeing that the 4-day passes are 80% sold out already. Each passing year I find I'm having to register just that much sooner because of the risk of a sellout.
