Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

It was Very Well done on screen atleast.

But why did Luke have to "phone it in" as it were? Why the long distance battle? He could have easily raised his X-wing from the depths and flown in to do battle and died on the field. I assumed they showed that sunken x-wing for just that reason.

In all honesty, the leaks make certain things sound worse than it actually is. I read what happened to Luke, hated it, yet when I watched it, I loved it. I have to say, sure, I like the old films, but some of the acting, especially Hamill's, wasn't that great. There is a reason why he was always Luke Skywalker, where as Harrison went on to do more great things. But here, in this film? Mark has come a long way, his acting was great here.

That said, unless there is a rather massive time jump to episode 9, I don't think this ''sequel trilogy'' will be a trilogy. There could easily be another 3 films from where the ending left things.

I feel this way aswell. I’ve steered Well clear of all trailers and leaks but have been reading up on the reactions.

I agree regarding Luke, it reads badly but worked great. As do most things vs how they work on screen. And his acting was spot on. All acting was good actually, but I think he stole the show.

And it was a beatiful movie, the cinematography and visuals were really good.

I was actually kinda expecting that aswell, but an X-Wing sunk in water for a few years working without a hitch would have been a stretch. It was unexpected but I think it worked. I was actually expecting it to be a Obi-Wan empty robe moment on the battlefield.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

The only benefit for the teleporting image is the 'all guns fire' gag.

Beyond that, the entrance, the kiss to Leia, and the fight itself seem undermined once the trick is revealed. Truly, there was no fight at all, just distraction. Which I suppose is the better Jedi way to be.

Just finished watching and WOW.

I think this is possibly THE best SW movie after Empire. I’m still soaking and playing it back in the back of my head - the action scenes, character development and seeing Luke back etc. Damn, I think this might even be better than Empire if I may be so bold :panic:

What a bunch of NUTTY talk!

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Right now, that's also a story point i'm not fully satisfied with. That astral projection from Luke to deceive Ben and buy time to surviving resistance members, though very in line with Luke's current state of mind about the Force and what it represents, robbed us of a real last fight against evil. I can see where Johnson and Co. are coming from with this (not quite where they are going now though) but a proper last saber duel would have been very cool. Instead, it looks like they are trying to prepare the ground for the future of the Force, move away from our Jedi/Sith knowledge of it and how it could evolve in the following movies.

The only benefit for the teleporting image is the 'all guns fire' gag.

One of too many missuses of comedic relief. Trying to build some drama at the end of this movie and this gag just stopped that building right away :gah:

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

But this movie is rife with subplots and storylines that go nowhere. From Snoke to the mission to the casino planet to Poe's "mutiny", all useless and pointless.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

For me I loved the Yoda sequence a lot. Basically telling Luke to stop moping and help out. He was too far away to reach the planet in time though. His interaction with Leia was great. The two actors and characters bounce off of each other seamlessly. I must have seen it at least a hundred times by now.

Watched today: I really don't like it a lot. There are "jumps" in the story and it's all put together confusingly (the casino; Rey who after the battle against Kylo Ren suddenly appears on the Millennium Falcon together with Chewbecca; Snoke who is easily defeated and no one knows his true identity; Benicio del Toro? °°). In addition there are still some mysteries to be revealed such as: Rey of who is daughter?

That is disappointing. I was hoping for better story telling from Disney. Alas.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

I just consider it all SW myself. I'm partial to the OT though of course being that's what I grew up with. However, that doesn't mean that I feel that everything else SW has to live up to it and if it doesn't, it sucks and is to be left out of canon. By default of the nostalgia I have for the OT, nothing else SW will live up to it, so I don't expect anyone to recapture that magic.

I don't particularly like TPM and AotC because I think both genuinely are soporific films, sans a few scenes. RotS though I enjoyed, and I enjoyed TFA and R1.

Have to disagree though that BW only produced the 84 Ghostbusters because of the release of the 2016 film. If that were the case, I would think that they would have made a set of the 2016 group as well. Them not doing so tells me they already knew that the 84 ones are more popular and if that is the case, I don't think anyone needed the 2016 film to be made to rekindle their love for the 84 film; if anything, all the 2016 release did was remind people how much/why they love the 84 film. Plus, there's no films that recently came out that suddenly gave them the impetus to make Tyler Durden and now Hannibal.

Of course they did announce the 84 group around the same time the 2016 film released, so I suppose it is possible that wasn't a coincidence. If they indeed only make the 84 group though because of the release of the 2016 film, I'm not sure why it took that. :lol

The fact that BW - AND Soldier Story - acquired the GB license and announced figs in the same year the reboot comes out? That's a coincidentally coincident example of coincidence. And... mental compartmentalization of the highest degree. :lol

The 30th Anniversary of GB passes without a whimper... then as the reboot releases, there's also stuff from '84? Just thank the girls for your 1984 dolls.:rotfl

And opinions aside, the bottom line is that the SW classic trilogy was culturally important - EVERYONE was fascinated by the story and characters and they were cultural touchstones that DEEPLY touched something intangible. The new movies and characters - all of them - will largely be forgotten in 20-30 years.

But why did Luke have to "phone it in" as it were? Why the long distance battle? He could have easily raised his X-wing from the depths and flown in to do battle and died on the field. I assumed they showed that sunken x-wing for just that reason.

It calls so many things into question - like why did Ben go on his ANH adventure at all? He could have phoned the whole thing in and Vader's fatal swing would have been as harmless as Kylo's. Why couldn't Yoda have done the same thing to assist Luke on Bespin in ESB? Why would Vader put himself in danger and go down to Hoth when he could have "virtually" have been there?

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Will definitely need to watch TLJ a few more times to figure out what most positive reviewers saw that i didn't. Finn/Rose arc is indeed frustrating. Basically leading to Finn/Phasma face off and feeling a lot like a redo of TFA Takodana duel...,only a movie too late. Phasma, along with Snoke, might well be the top 2 worst handled characters in the whole saga.

Well seeing what it did to Luke, it might be a last resort.

Because you didn't pay attention. Early during the movie, when Rey first contacts Kylo through the Force, he is surprised and tells her the effort will kill her if she keeps it up. She is tremendously powerful in the Force through and their interactions are little more than talking, so she manages. Luke projected himself for a lot longer, did some fighting (dodging at least a few times), and he is far from being nearly as young or as powerful (potentially at least) as Rey.

The exertion pushed Luke to the brink of death, and the fact that he was finally at peace over what happened allowed him to let go and become one with the Force.

Obviously it's still a new usage of the Force in the story but I don't think it jeopardizes previous situations at all. Obi-Wan was old and less powerful than the Skywalker line, so he wouldn't have survived this either. Yoda was ancient and likely wouldn't have survived it either. Anakin/Vader was powerful enough to do it, though as Vader who really knows what his powers were compared to his true potential as the "Chosen One", but this is a technique that only a Jedi would want to use, because it's meant to avoid combat and be smarter than that, Sith revel in combat and slaughter, Vader wanted to be in the thick of melee whenever possible.

For me the middle dragged a bit with the casino sequence. I really loved all the island stuff. It was great to see Luke again after all this time. The porgs were cute as well.

Haven't seen it yet. tickets for friday. doing my best to avoid spoilers. My only real concern, is I don't want to see them kill off Luke in THIS film. Much like yoda, if they MUST kill him, save it for the third film.

That's exactly what I thought was gonna happen. It would be raised again, and he would swoop, self eject from the cockpit land on an at-at, decapitate it, ride the decapitated head down to the door buster canon jump off, they both explode, forward somersault flip (remember your training *yoda voice*) landing in front of Kylo, they battle head to head, luke takes his hand, kyle fighting one handed still, but at last luke is too old and knows he's defeated, so he takes the obi wan stance, tells Kylo to strike him down, and he will be more powerful than he can possibly imagine, then disappears into a cloak on the floor.

*drops mic walks away*
