I saw the funniest quote about this movie today

"The only thing I got out of this movie is that prostitutes and patients in mental facilities are interchangeable"

I actually thought this one (from CHUD) was funny: “It’s like Andy Warhol flew out of a candy whore hole.”

:lol I'm not even sure what it means, but :lol

I don't know, it seemed like there was every bit as much action as the trailers would lead one to believe. The problem was all that action was boring. Pretty, but boring. The "real" story of what's going on in the mental institution is so one dimensional, and the characters so bland that it makes those action scenes even less compelling because I didn't give two craps about what happened to any of them. Just my opinion, of course. :dunno
:exactly::goodpost:
You know...I agree.

I think my point still stands, and that was the downfall of the movie.

It wanted to be a big action movie...but tried to put in a "great deep plot" and that didn't work...so the movie became confusing and jarring.

Shoulda just been a mindless shoot 'em up. Could've created a really fun movie.

yep...
IF Snyder wanted to to the different realities why not make the action parts a virtual game or something? maybe a girl in a very abusive family that logs in to play this game or something
While I know that might sounds stupid to someone, It would have been at least better than what he made. I guess like Gamer or something, it might have been more interesting? i don't know

I have to admit I like everything Snyder does, even the Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole was not terrible, But Sucker Punch was the one movie I could not like, I was so out of touch with the characters that I even went online a couple of times, I could care less,
the action fantasy scenes were beyond pointless,
I was looking forward to this, and was so disappointed...

I just saw this recently and I loved it. It has become part of my favorite top 5 movies instantly.

I see it getting such a bad rep but for me it just really "clicked"

It would have been better without the whole brothel scenerio, madhouse to escapism fantasy & back

The brothel was a glitzy metaphor for the horrible things that were going on at the asylum. I really doubt that showing the reality of those atrocities would have suddenly won over audience members.

Its funny that for the continued venom toward this film its actually my second most watched movie of 2011 behind Captain America. Its not the most cerebral of films but the characters are sympathetic, the cast is great, the music and action are engaging and visually appealing. I don't know, I guess I'm just not getting what's so horrible about it.

People carry on like its some loser's wet dream of a fanboy fantasy but in all honesty I find it borderline tame. I don't know that I can say the same for the upcoming BD Premium Format unfortunately. :lol

I liked it, just the 3 storylines made it harder then it needed to be to watch. the wife is insisting I get the figures too :)

One thing that I find fascinating about Sucker Punch is the double standard in its criticism vs. the praise and lifelong adoration of Return of the Jedi.

Other than admittedly iconic SWisms like JW's score and Speeder Bikes and things how is ROTJ a superior, less "fan-wanky" film?

It seems that if you write off one movie the same should hold true for the other.

Both films featured earnest women in "sexy" fanboy outfits that kick ass against big monster-like beings.

Both films involve escaping and destroying an institution of destruction.

Both films feature a real-life mentor and a ghost-like mentor.

Both films feature a father figure villain and a "head of the institution" villain.

Both films feature the protagonist losing it when his/her "father" threatens his/her sister. After going on the offensive both protagonists achieve victory through giving themselves up.

The SWisms obviously tip the scales in ROTJ's favor but I would contend that the other differences actually favor Sucker Punch.

ROTJ had no stakes. For all intents and purposes the challenges are a joke that the heroes cakewalk through. They are purely visual and fun, which is apparently okay for a movie as long as the title isn't "Sucker Punch." SP's fights have more style than substance as well but at least dramatically three girls die and a fourth is lobotomized.

ROTJ also had a very cookie cutter ending. Blow up the DS and then go party. You can't say the same for SP. "Victory through lobotomization" is a new one as far as I'm aware.

I think a lot of people (critics included) saw the "porn star goes to war" trailers and made up their minds in advance that they weren't going to allow themselves to be made fun of as losers seek nothing more from cinema. So they bashed it or avoided it and I think that's a shame. It isn't a great film but its definitely fascinating and surprisingly artistic considering the subject matter.

That's a really cool comparison there.

I like both movies but I actually liked Sucker Punch more.

Finally got around to watching Sucker Punch (thanks to cplhicks strong recommendation) and I loved it! The story turned out better than I thought and it had a lot of actors/actresses that I really enjoyed!

9/10 :D

Interesting comparison. I'm not sure I can dissect why I love ROTJ, and have no desire to ever watch Sucker Punch again. That's just the way I feel. And I went into the theater with no expectations whatsoever.

it amazes me how people can't just be ok with differing opinions. I enjoyed SuckerPunch .... and Im ok with those who think it sucked balls.... I don't need to preach to them why their opinion should be different ...... but they should also be ok if I like it while they think it sucks ... people just need to chill the ____ out sometimes ... .... :monkey1 ....

Was that directed at me? :lol
