Bale is the definitive Batman in my opinion.
Are some of you actually serious about a nomination for playing batman? Ledger on the other hand WILL be nominated, why? because his performance was exactly what a commitee of the academy awards would look for, he should even win too.
An actor is rewarded for a role when there is something beyond special involved, Bale is an excellent actor but far from even being nominated for his performance in TDK.
However that all being said his BEST performance would be from "Empire of the sun" and he was just a little kid then.
TDK - Ledger = Batman Returns, Spiderman 3, Hulk 2003, X-men, etc. Good film to watch in Imax but mediocre without Ledger and not worthy of any other praise after that.
Ledger MADE the film x10, Nolan did an excellent job but picture Terminator 1 & 2 without Arnold.
i love TDK, and i respect other people's opinions on it as well, be it that they hate it, or share the same love for it like myself. but dude...you're grouping TDK with BR, Hulk 03, xmen....and above all....SPIDERMAN 3? really dude? REALLY? SPIDERMAN 3? with a plot you can watch on a daily soap opera? SERIOUSLY??
NO actor could've saved the disaster that is spiderman 3. you can throw all the principle actors from TDK into that stink fest of a movie, it still would've been a joke. sorry man, if you don't think TDK is amazing, fine...you don't even have to agree that it's not oscar worthy material, that's cool...but please don't associate it with the aforementioned movies.
He may get a nod from the MTV Movie Awards, but that's it. He is not deserving of an Oscar Nom for TDK IMO...
Don't get me wrong, he is one of our finest Actors, but for this role in this film, he is not really being considered in these parts.
I could have sworn I typed TDK - (without) Ledger would have been as mediocre as the above mentioned movies. I absolutely LOVED TDK, I saw it 3 times in Imax. I was trying to make a point, maybe some bad examples but just trying to note that Ledger made the film what it was.
Nolan directed a great film, did a smoking job from start to end but again no Ledger no deal.
yea i did see that ledger line, but even still, without ledger, the movie would've still been incredible. if he didn't take on the joker, would it be legendary like it is now? who knows? maybe another actor could take the joker to places we haven't seen (on film). however, to say that ledger and ledger ALONE made the movie what it is, no dice man.
nolan makes wise choices. he and his team re-introduced batman on the silver screen with incredible results, and now almost every hollywood studio wants to make their comic book adaptations with the same atmosphere as begins and TDK. i believe in nolan. wait for part 3, it'll blow us all away...i'll show ya. (ok, i'm sure you and others know where the last two lines are inspired from =D)
i'm pretty confident that if TDK didn't have ledger in it, it'll still be an amazing movie. as you've stated, you saw the movie 3 times and loved it, but i gotta disagree that ledger's impeccable performance as the joker made the movie what it is.
not trying to start **** with you...i was just really bothered by the choice of movies you grouped TDK with.

Fair enough, I guess Spiderman 3 was a low blow! I mean regardless it was a great film right?
That's pushing it a bit.
Quite a lot, actually.
Not to mention you're severely underestimating Nolan as a director and visionary. Let's not forget that the 2nd best superhero film of all time under TDK is Batman Begins, and Ledger was nowhere in sight.
I hate to break it to the Ledger-crowd, but Nolan could've demanded that performance out of most trained actors. He wrote the words, and he envisioned the Joker the way it was translated on-screen.
Ledger read the script.

hey i was behind nolan's decision to cast ledger since day one. while i did disagree with voorhees comments about ledger being solely responsible for TDK's success, you do have to admit that his work is astounding and provided a very special performance. agreed that nolan and his brother came up with a fantastic script, it still boils down to the actor.
many here say ledger is the definitive joker. i'm in the band as well, because his approach and determination gave us a villain that won't be forgotten in a long time. granted a lot of it was in the script...but we all know a lot of it was improv on ledgers part. i mean he secluded himself in a hotel to develop the voice, and wrote in diaries joker style. even hand picked his own outfit. ledger had to get in this characters head, develop him, and when he succeeded, he later admitted in interviews that this man is REALLY SCREWED up in the head and can't fathom the things he does.
you can have the greatest lines written for you, but you have to be REALLY gifted in order to make the audience believe you are that character. it's all about conviction. as i said, it's in the script, but there are so many other gifted actors out there that if given the time and same determination, that actor could've developed him in their own unique way and gave us a completely different joker and....dare i say, maybe even better? i said maybe!! put away that knife dammit!! either way, no matter how differently the joker is played, it still needs to match nolan's vision.
think back for batman 89...EVERYONE thought jack's portrayal of the joker was phenomenal. it was great at the time. but fast forward many years and during that time, we get mark hamills take on him, and currently, ledgers. now what are most people saying? "jack was just acting as himself" and so forth.
who knows what'll happen in the future. when someone with nolan's vision of gotham takes the reins for future installments of the nolanverse...maybe another actor will take a stab at playing joker. and maybe, that person will blow us all away. time will tell.
NOLAN....PLEASE ANNOUNCE PART 3!! please!!!! i need my bat flick fix!!
wasn't ledger at waapa (western australias performing arts) before setting off for sydney? i'm sure of it.
Anyhoo, btw, i still to this very second do not get all the hate for maggie gyleenhal (sic), i MUCH MUCH MUCH prefer her than katie holmes, in looks, acting, everything, i really dont think she's that bad looking at all.
as for batman 3, i heard someone throw around giovanni rubisi the other day, for the riddler, and you know what i REALLY like that idea
