Joker trailer is the best trailer i've seen in years. I have chills every time i watch it and i already seen it several times. It's so good that i don't even care about any Batman movie, i want this movie to be damn good. And i want his figure, Phoenix is master actor.

Yeah. I freaking love this trailer. The last time I got chills from seeing a trailer was Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. And for me personally, it didnt disappoint cause I'm a big Snyder fan.

Not saying I havent been very excited to see the trailers for the other movies, but this trailer confirms what I want to see.

Agree with you both...love everything i'm seeing so far..From the teaser alone Phoenix's interpretation is spellbindingly creepy!

I accepted Burton’s ‘89 Joker having an origin; this one — it’s just one continuity amongst many, so I can accept it in context.

As for feeling sorry for him ... maybe ... until he snaps and turns into a cold-blooded psychopathic murderer, at which point he’s not so sympathetic in my mind.

I’ll just wait to see how it plays out. The trailer is very, very good, but it’s almost too on the nose in terms of that bleak ‘70s style, which makes the more cynical film-goer in me suspicious.

If they bring something unique out, great. But another copy of a copy of a copy I can do without.

Looking at DC's movies, I really don't care that this is an origin movie since they're all over the place. This is just one movie and isn't defining anything besides Phoenix's and the film's take on the character. So I'm excited and am looking forward to it's release. Unless he starts using a ton of weapons I can see it being a very simple HT release.

DC is doing something different with this movie - it's more of a smaller, "artsy" film than a "superhero/comic book movie." It's not geared for kids and I don't think we're going to see toys. This is an "awards bait" type film, not a summer blockbuster - it's designed to be taken more seriously ("cinema" rather than "a movie."), not to sell toys.

Wouldn't you think studios automatically bundle in likenesses rights in contracts with actors in big movies these days? Maybe he's got to approve of the sculpt, but I can't imagine they would make a movie (let alone a Joker movie) and not be able to do merch for it. That would have to be a deal breaker for a studio.

I think the studio needed Phoenix more than Phoenix needed this movie. I think they wanted someone with deep acting cred, which gives Phoenix all the leverage in negotiations. This is something unique, and Phoenix is one of the really "artsy" actors (like Daniel Day Lewis), who probably feels merchandising and commercialism is beneath him. WB is going to have known that going in, and the fact that this is supposed to be a one-off movie also means it's more likely WB would waive merchandising rights (especially if they weren't planning on merchandising it much in the first place).

I just don't see Phoenix as being the type of guy who would be cool with doing a movie, knowing they were going to be making action figures of him.

Maybe some people just do not like the idea of films being a cash cow for dozens of retailers.

I can understand that point of view.

It does not mean he thinks he better than his fans, that a bit of a stretch.

In the DCU/DCEU or MU/MCU nothing is definitive, ever.
This is just another (very promising) interpretation of the Joker, there will be others.
These iconic characters achieve eternal life through perpetual re-invention.
We keep what we like and forget the rest.
I love the fact that I can get a kick out of watching the Dark Knight trilogy or Batfleck without feeling the need to connect them.

I don't mind any given story giving the Joker a backstory - we've had multiple different backstories in the movies and multiple different backstories in the comics.

Adding one more into the mix doesn't make it "definitive" - it actually makes it less so, by adding yet another choice in the multiple-choice category.

Many misconceptions here.
Some things are not negotiable, about half the revenue from superheroes and similar properties comes form licensing.
It doesn't matter if the studio invested 50 or 400 million on this specific project, the principle is the same, they will not allow anything to get in the way of profit making.
You have no way of knowing how successful this film will be, not that it would change anything to the principles at work.

The notion that the studio needs Phoenix more than he needs them is ridiculous.
No actor is irreplaceable, not one.
The studios know that, so do the actors and the few who fail to get this may see their careers cut short.
There's also the idea that Phoenix or Day-Lewis are the type of guys who wouldn't want to see their likeness on toys because they're "real" actors or "artists".
That is a naive notion, if they agree to work on superhero projects they know what the deal is is.
These guys are professionals first and foremost, they've been in this business for years and know that playing the game is what gets them millions and allows them to do what they like such as acting (or cobbling or whatever it is that Day-Lewis does now).

Seeing as how I ended my statement with a QUESTION MARK, I did NOT necessarily say that's what I think of him. I was merely asking if that was the long and the short of it.

It's Joker, so there will be lots of merchandise, such as posters, t shirts, masks, costumes, Funko pops, and high end "collectibles." The film is coming out in October just in time for Halloween merchandise too. No Mattel action figures and toys that you'd see at Walmart in the kids area tho. However, the "adult collectible" areas will have merchandise and places like Hot Topic will sell stuff. I also expect companies like Mezco, Mafex, Hot Toys, and maybe Neca to make figures. I doubt we'll get an Arthur figure, just Joker. I could see HT maybe making an Arthur figure in clown costume though, but it's unlikely. I'd love a head sculpt without the "joker" makeup because I think he'll be Arthur throughout most of the film and I personally think Juaquin Phoenix actually looks more like the Joker without the makeup. Funko will definitely make Arthur Pop figure.

HT will do at least two Jokers from this film- we'll see but I see this as being a big merchandise project despite the R rating that is rumored
