Well, for me, it was frustratingly derivative. Borrowing from any number of sci-fi films including, Moon, POTA, The Matrix and many others. The twist was pretty much spelled out from the opening. Having said that though, the visuals were great - looks ace on Blu. The soundtrack is very good too, I listen to it at least once a week and I have watched the movie with isolated score a couple of times.

I love the soundtrack. I got it on Vinyl from Mondo. It's beautifully produced and sounds great.

Yeah. I suppose it must be tough be original these days. Everything draws from something else.

My one complaint was the scene with Morgan Freeman being in the trailer. It had you thinking Jack was a *baddie*(Albeit unwittingly) from the start.

Indeed. It's a great score. I listened to it today in the car.
How can a man die better. Than facing fearful odds, for the ashes of his fathers, and the temples of his gods.

For me, i loved the journey of redemption that the character of Jack Harper Tech-49 went on. He thinks he's Jack. But here's merely a shadow until his memories fully surface. Something which generally happens around the five year mark.
There were many subtle underscores in the plot. The *five year mission* Jack and Vika are on is the longest time any Jack Clone can do his job effectively without the memories surfacing. The "two more weeks and out" will mean Jack and Vika pack up their gear and get in the bubble ship, fly up to the TET and likely be euthanised and recyled to be fed intravenously to the myriad vat-grown clones there. And two new copies will be sent down to start another five year mission.
We don't learn how many Jack and Vika's there are dotted around the planet but it must at least be 52, and possibly could be thousands, each separated by a "radiation zone" barrier they cannot cross.
Each station occupied by Jack and Vika across the globe contains a "malfunctioning" Drone with no shielding. An otherwise flawless death-dealing machine which *cannot be put into the field* due to a lack of parts. When the reality is far more grim. That drone is there for the minute and hour that Vika reveals they *are no longer an effective team*, and the Drone will turn them both to ashes.
And the real tragedy of the movie is Vika. Her clear motivation is that *she* was already in love with Jack before it all hit the fan. She is the one character that begins the story having what she wants, but always doomed to having it taken from her.
With Vika-49 ashes, and Jack-49 dead following the destruction of the TET, Jack-52 finds Julia. But we never get told what happened to Vika-52. Presumably she is still living in her tower apartment. Waiting for Jack-52 to come home.
And what about the greater story of all the thousands of Jacks and Vikas across the planet with no job to do?
There's the subversive sub-text about how many multiples of Jack and Vika have been tricked these many long years into fighting a war to pretty much exterminate humanity.
The poetry of a husband and wife reunited after many years apart, then learning that in fact the husband is only a copy.
And of course the flip side of Julia coming to love that copy of a copy of a copy for the fire of her husband that she can still see burns inside Jack-49.
And if she can learn to love Jack-49, then perhaps she can also learn to love Jack-52.
Oblivion is not a flawless film, but it still raises a lot of questions for the careful viewer to ponder over.

I spent the entire weekend searching the net for plans to the bubble ship. Loads of pics, but very few plans, lol

Even though the movie shares some touchstones with other movies (and I guessed the MAJOR twist right away, if not the less-major one) I enjoyed the journey so much, I didn't care. Which is really what I want from a movie. A good story. And I thought this had it.

That's a great analysis of the movie, username. I like the movie as well and don't mind that it's a little derivative. It still brings it's own uniqueness.

I wouldn't mind a figure. Sculpt looks decent, especially if the nose is fixed.

Yeah. Me too. It shares a lot with other similar movies, but did add enough in story and in visual styles to make me happy.

Thanks a lot. I have to admit each time i *watch it*(Like today), i watch the movie, then watch it again with the commentary, then watch it again with just the audio.
I am lucky when i am at work to be the only one in the office, so i can have the movie on in the background while i am working.

I actually think that, even if the nose isn't changed, this is one of the best Cruise sculpts i have seen.
That recent mess from Soldier Story has so many things wrong with it i don't know where to start.
I'd happily buy three of the figure as is with no revisions.
I'll need beginning of the movie Jack-49, Jack-52, and end of the movie Jack-49 all dirty and battle scarred.

I so rarely listen to commentaries. I take it this one is worth a listen?
The thing that's so cool about this is I was just re-watching the movie the other day and wishing there had been some merch. I'd love a replica of his rifle. I've seen some kits on RPF but I'd need someone to build it for me because... well, I'm lazy. LOL.

Yea it would've been great to get a good scaled replica of the plane he rides in as as well as the drones. I'd even take "Bob" :lol

Totally. It's Joseph Kosinski and Tom Cruise. Well worth a listen.

Another thing i loved about the movie was the house, and how they had all those cloud effects done in camera. Seeing that they did that really enhanced my enjoyment of the visuals in the sky tower.

Lol. His rifle is not that hard a design to make.

The bubbleship, for all it's complex geometries, is a fairly simple design. I have sourced 12" spheres and 8" spheres. The entire thing would be 1.2m long in 1/6.

I will more than likely pick this figure up and substitute it with the MI:3 BP sculpt and have that repainted.

I didn't hate Oblivion, but it's not the best recent Tom Cruise Sci-fi movie. I'd love to see someone do a Edge of Tomorrow with the whole exoskeleton thingie.

The studio is now calling it Live, Die, Repeat.
I feel oblivion is a far superior movie personally but only because of the larger implied backstory.

as far as I knew, that's just the slogan they were using. Even the box art has it but still says "Edge of Tomorrow" at the bottom
