Really curious to hear about Japan's take on this Godzilla.

Another topic, with the announcement of Godzilla 2000 on blu-ray, with both international and the Japanese version (for the first time) included, does anyone know anything about the Japanese version? I don't remember this movie at all - any good (either version)?

Never seen it, but want to, SciFi Japan has specs and apparently the Japanese version is 8 minutes longer.

I have the score for 2000 from Japan, there are additional tracks for the American version, so typical American cut, the original score is even altered for their version.

The 8 minutes dont help. One of the few situations where the american dubbed conversion is actually an improvement over the original.

Interesting. Is there some legal thing with Godzilla 84?

Yup, the rights to distribution outside of Japan have been held up for years due to agreements made around the original U.S. release in 1985 and best rumor I've seen is that Toho'd rather ride out that contract to expiration than to pay the legal fees to end it and get control back. Problem is it'a also not currently in hands of anyone that can or wants to do anything with it, so we're screwed. I'm hoping it's a 30 year contract that'll expire next year.

Yeah, but where's my damn '84 BR :impatient::tap

:(

Or that Godzilla 2014 does so well in Japan that Toho decides to pay the legal fees now and fast track a blu-ray of it. One can hope.

I think MF, GS, Biojex and I need to throw a Godzilla themed party when 2014 comes out on bluray. :lol

I'll be on my couch wearing my Godzilla 2014 hat and shirt, pint glass in hand, NECA figure on the table next to me, baby in my other arm :lol

Depending on who does it though, Godzilla BR release can do poorly. Godzilla vs. Biollante came out about 2 years ago on BR for the first time ever, first time on DVD in the U.S. even and the BR sold for $8, there were bugs in the menus and settings where people got replacement discs and it warmed shelves for a long time. It got so cheap people bought it up and now it's so scarce you pay more like $20 plus if you find it. There isn't a huge financial motivation to get Godzilla movies on U.S. release. I've read that a lot of the BR transfers are ok but nothing special, though Biollante is really nice cuz time was put into them. Curious how nice the Sony ones came out.
