Re: New Judge Dredd movie

I'm quite surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. I'd love to see a sequel whether it be a theatrical release or direct-to-DVD.

It's funny but the more I watch this movie, the more I want a Dredd figure.

Funny? It's a tragedy! :monkey2:monkey2:monkey2

Unless Karl Urban changes his name to Johnny Depp...

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

Wife is out of town visiting family for a week so it's just me and the kids. They're down for the night so its time to fire up HD On Demand and start plowing through movies that no one else in this house wants to see.

First up, DREDD. :D

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

/\ Father of the year right here folks. :D

I think you guys misunderstood. My kids were "down" as in down for the night. In BED. :lol

I watched Dredd by myself.

So anyway, yeah, that might have been the most mindless movie I've seen in a long time. With all the praise on this board I was really expecting something...more.

Karl Urban was absolutely badass. Granted. Kind of like if Dirty Harry had been killed instead of Alex Murphy and rebuilt as Robocop. Totally kickass.

But the movie was just 90 minutes of people shooting each other in a building. All right. I guess if you want to watch 90 minutes of people shooting each other there's your movie. I think I'll stick to films with actual plots though. And even the bloodletting was often kind of lame because a lot of the spray looked CG. I'm assuming because it was 3D CG blood made it easier to make it look like it was shooting at the audience or something. But in 2D at home it reminded me of that idiotic Alien vs Predator movie where they added CG blood in post to change it from PG-13 to R. Meh.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

It really isn't the same watching it in 2D, it's one of those movies that has to be watched in 3D (and no you don't get sprayed with blood....)

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

Maybe so. But even in 3D I'd imagine I'd feel that Karl Urban's baddassery was wasted in this movie. Imagine TDKR if the entire movie was just Batman fighting thugs in the sewer on his way to Bane. FOR NINETY MINUTES. What the hell, how is that a movie? :lol

I won't rain on your guys' parade any more, and I hope you get your Urban Dredd Hot Toys figure. :duff

Well said. :goodpost:

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

Except Prometheus. :hi5:

...I'd rate Django Unchained, Skyfall and Cabin in the Woods higher than Dredd as well.

I enjoyed the movie though. Enough to buy it on blu-ray.

Almost like the original Die Hard. What drivel! :slap

I think TDKR is a good counterpoint to Dredd though. Dredd had tight continuous action within a confined space while Bruce Wayne was all over the place and only had a few fights to speak of. Dredd's partner had real utility throughout the film, Catwoman could ride a bike (looked good though).

Still MOTY 2012 and nothing can change it.

Word. :)

Dredd is the perfect movie for the "short attention span generation" of today. Otherwise I find it highly overrated for what it actually is. It's not a bad movie but it's far from being the great movie it's portrayed to be. And I actually own the movie as well :lol

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

Saw DREDD for the first time the other nite...wife out of town, kids in bed...movie-time catch-up...much like Khev!

I liked the action in the movie...Urban was BADA$$ as everyone seems to agree. Would have liked a bit more character development in Dredd...but it was a fun movie. His sidekick was acted well...and could be developed more...

Would love to see a Dredd figure...but sadly, this property doesn't have the muscle to generate one...unless the overseas fans are hot on the property.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

Yeah I suppose if the original Die Hard had no real cleverness, no great villain (or henchmen), no great banter, no stakes due to a lack of anyone the hero cares about being involved, and instead was just John McClane using various voice activated ammunition to blow people up as he ascended floor by floor on his way to Hans Gruber for the entire movie then I suppose you're right, Dredd and Die Hard are like totally the same dude. ;)

Some of you guys are clearly not familiar with the Dredd source material. There are a lot of satirical thematic elements in the film, and that's what it's about, not the plot.

This scene alone is provocative:

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

The original Robocop was chalk full of satirical thematic elements (so many in fact that I bet it has more than Dredd) from opening to close (and also set against the backdrop of a violent, disturbing future) but it didn't present them at the expense of a compelling plot.
