Myself, I Love the figure. And it seems to me that more than a few people are making generalized statements based on their own opinions. It is great to have those opinions, but it is practicing something less than accuracy to say that the figure does not represent anything that at least some collectors want. I have no problem accepting the imperfections that show through the costume. This is an action figure made from a costume placed over a mannequin. There will be things that fall short of a perfectly human look. I am OK with that.
It is no secret that I place no importance whatsoever on the portrait's looking like the actor. I can like comic books that the artwork does not look like the actors, cartoons with the same thing, and action figures in the same way. And that tolerance of imperfection translates directly to the mannequin's not looking perfectly like the human body and that imperfection showing through the costume. I also have no problem believing that more than a few of the mis-steps on this figure were not intentional. Sideshow usually corrects the major blunders and this leads me to wonder why they accepted the porn star lips. But while I completely understand that some people find them to be ghastly...I can deal with them despite the fact that they are not what I would have sculpted. This is an artist's interpretation, not my own.
In time, new experience and new technology will allow for these issues to be improved on. And when that happens, I will happily buy the improved figure and keep the old as statement to the advancement of the abilities of the makers of these figures. Similar to the reason I would keep a vintage 3 3/4" Kenner figure to compare it to the current Hasbro ones. I mentioned before that I was told at CC that one or two of the sculptors already want to upgrade Jedi Luke incorporating many of the improvements including the SS/HT mannequin. They did not say they were going to...they just want to.
And, to bring this message full circle, I will say that despite the fact that there are people who do not have that tolerance, there appear to be others that do. And thus, the sold out Ilum Padme.
It is just a simple matter of different people haveing different preferences. Like some guys preferring blondes and other brunettes. Some guys prefer motorcycles and some prefer trucks (sorry ladies, I have no idea of what comparison to make for ladies).

I completely agree with the likeness issue. Bringing in the example of comic books illustrates it perfectly. From one panel to the next, the look of a comic book character can change. I'm sure there are people who would say, "But this is a representation of an actor/actress; that doesn't change." And so it doesn't. But for one, it's a representation, not a photgraph or a computer scan, and for two, it's still a character that has been translated into multiple incarnations in as many media forms.

I never wanted this figure, so I don't have a lot invested in how the figure turns out, but likeness is not my qualm with it. On the grounds of the quality of representation, I think it falls short. But they are still working on it, so I'm interested to see how well it turns out.

I don't think it's a likeness issue, but the costume just doesn't translate well to real life. If they go the spandex route and discard the shiny I think it will be a winner of a figure. But would I prefer an Arena Padme instead of this? You betcha.

The only one I want is the arena version. With everything she had from Tatooine through to the lightsaber fights. But even if they have the fabric right, I don't want to see that body underneath it. (Or under whatever Aayla Secura is wearing.)

That's a deal breaker. :monkey3
