I'm glad you mentioned Therion. Perfect example of Symphonic Metal. If you like hard music with more melody, research that genre specifically. The second band I listed in my first post is a Symphonic Metal band: Epica.

Therion pretty much invented the Symphonic Metal genre. And they singlehandedly got me interested in metal again. I loved Metallica and Megadeth when I was 14-16 years old, then I got into Punk/Hardcore for a number of years. Then it was Nine Inch Nails and Pink Floyd (still love both). But then one day I heard this song and it changed my life:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqLYjRn--GI

I actually heard it on the local college radio station and didn't hear who it was, but it started a search for any metal that incorporated melody/symphonic elements. It started with Power Metal (Blind Guardian), then Power Metal with symphonic elements (Rhapsody, Nightwish), and then finally I found Symphonic Metal. Bands like Epica, Within Temptation, and After Forever. I couldn't get enough. Years later I found that original Therion song (above). :)

Since then I've broadened out to love most forms of Metal. :rock

I could keep talking about this stuff, but I'm off to bed. :rip

oh yeah I love that song!, yeah Therion is pretty good,
I knew Epica but dudnt like their singing, I love withing temptation too, my favorite album is mother Earth,

What about Epica's singing don't you like? Is it Mark Jansen's death growls? They definitely are a lot harder than Within Temptation. But they are also a lot more cerebral than any other Syymphonic Metal band I've found. Very complex musically, and very thematic lyrically. I really love Epica. I love the combination of these two songs back to back on "The Divine Conspiracy". The first is one of their more complex/progressive songs, and the second one is more pop like and kind of like desert. :):

You mentioned them once before, and I checked them out and really liked them. I kinda forgot about them--thanks for the reminder. :)

I was gonna mention them, but hesitated because I wasn't sure if they were Metal either. But I really love them. Ænima was really important to me for a long time. Such a great album.

Some of this stuff I just can't get into, like death metal.

I guess I'll just stick to my Led Zepplin and groups like that, thank you. :lol

I like Slayer, Nuclear Assault, Cannibal Corpse, Brujeria, etc. That was the style of the local music scene I grew up in. But, I don't do black metal, melodic or otherwise.

I really liked Neurosis for a while, but they got too moody. Enemy of the Sun is one of the greatest metal albums ever.

Could you be more specific? :lol

I can't. :lol

For you guys that like the epic/power metal, this is pretty interesting, bordering near prog metal.

For a while I was into stuff like Kamelot, Stratovarious, etc but the drumming is just so repetitive. Double kick double kick double kick over and over and over. Just can't do it anymore.

pfft. get some culture...;)

That sounded like straight up prog metal to me. Pretty cool though.

When I think epic/power metal bordering on prog metal I think Kamelot and Masterplan. Both of which I love.

I guess I haven't gotten there yet. Sometimes I listen to songs and think, 'you know what would make this chorus way better? Double kick double kick double kick!' :lol

Actually, Kamelot does very little of that...

What happened to the "Metal" thread? Between Maglor and Prog there's a bunch of crap in it. :monkey1

Hey, what did I do? :lol

Post up some stuff you like, I'd be curious to hear it! :)

I'll leave out the usual suspects that got me into metal like Maiden, Metallica, Pantera etc. Now I'm more into Brutal vocals and/or technical guitars as I play myself. I can even listen to a band who's singer I can't really stand if the guitar work is impressive enough. It's actually how I got into the first in my list - and I actually like the vocals now!

Protest the Hero
Sikth
Animals as Leaders
Periphery
Born of Osiris
Lamb of God
Unearth
Parkway Drive
We Butter the Bread With Butter (funny but brutal Germans)
All That Remains
Dioramic
All Shall Perish
Becoming the Archetype
As I Lay Dying
Trivium (early stuff before he started singing)
Soilwork
In Flames
Gorod
The Black Dahlia Murder
Centaurus A
Dead Man in Reno
Killswitch Engange (I know some will want to slap me for this - but I'm okay with that :)

I just know I've left some good ones out but I think the list is long enough.

Good list my man!

Sikth!

Didn't think I would see their name here.
Love that band, just wish they were still going.

Soilwork are one of my top bands ever too!

You did leave out one of the best bands ever though......

MESHUGGAH!

[ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9LpMZuBEMk[/ame]

if you want more technical than that check out

brain drill
beneath the massacre
veil of maya
necrophagist
radiance
cattle decapitation

Now there's one I forgot! Veil of Maya, great band. I know I'm in the minority here but Meshugga are just too monotonous for my taste. And how could I forget The Human Abstract?!? Their last album is absolutely amazing! Gutted that they broke up. I liked the new singer much more than the old one.

I know the others in your list but never heard of Radiance. I'll have to check them out.

Blotted Science would fit in that list pretty well. Sometimes they're a bit too crazy for me but the technicality is awe inspiring.

Craziest band ever (IMO) - Psyopus :horror

Ok, just listened to Radiance. First off: Jesus H. those are some loooong azz songs! Unfortunately the singer is not at all my cup of tea.

Fates Warning is great, ever hear of Anacrusis?

Unfortunately more vocals that I just can't get into. Let the verbal abuse begin but I can't even listen to Maiden anymore because of the vocals :-( i loved them so much when I was young but hey, tastes change over the years.

LOL that's funny you mention that because I love the vocals, I like how he goes from melodic singing to evil shrieks....though I have really only seriously listened to their first album "Suffering Hour" which is pretty traditional thrash rather than the later prog/thrash albums.

I know what you mean though, I didn't like Vio-Lence at first due to vocal style, but the music was just so cool it grew on me....now, I wouldn't have them any other way and they are one of my top five favorite thrashers.

Too high for you? I personally, can't stand the "brutal" or overly deep vocals. I can deal with occassional screaming or cookie monster.

My favorite metal vocalists are Geoff Tate from Queensryche and Ray Alder from Fates Warning. Love the higher side. Also really like more emotive signers like Daniel Gildenlow from Pain of Salvation.
