According to official April figures released by the NPD Group, the Playstation 3 found itself beaten out for fifth place by an unusual competitor: its predecessor, the Playstation 2.

A 50% leap in Playstation 2 sales accounts for the surprising change, an increase likely prompted by the system's price cut on April 1, a move which apparently electrified interest in the nine-year old platform.

The PS2's success was probably the only nugget of April sales news to put smiles on the faces of Sony execs. Nintendo platforms continued their lockdown of the top spots, with the Wii coming second and the DS coming both first and third, courtesy of the just-launched DSi: the DS's two hardware variations accounted for an astonishing million sales during April.Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 was down slightly over last April, but still managed a solid fourth place and remains on course for a record-breaking year.

But both the Playstation 3 and PSP posted disappointing results, with the PS3 placing sixth with its worst performance in over 18 months, and the PSP limping in seventh with a total of 116,000 sales -- down over 30% on March's numbers.

The news has revitalized persistent rumors of price cuts for Sony's PS3. The system's base model is between $150 and $200 more expensive than its competitors, the Wii and Xbox 360. Industry news site Gamasutra predicts we'll see a $100 cut in the $400 Playstation 3 announced at the E3 video games trade show in Los Angeles in early June.
So if you're contemplating taking the Playstation plunge -- and with top exclusive superhero thriller Infamous just a week away, we're betting some of you are -- you might well want to hold off and wait to see what June has in store.

I'll be a little more inclinded to buy one for $300. Asd long as its the backwards compatable version.

Amazon still has the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle in stock which was the last backwards compatible system released in the United States. It ain't cheap though...
and its not 100% backwards compatible. only the 60gb version was 100% IIRC. this is pretty sad IMO. sony really dropped the ball with the way they handled the PS3. admittedly, it is my most used system i own, but that's only because of the blu ray and my brother having call of duty modern warfare. for some reason sony was really cocky and just expected to dominate this generation of gaming like the previous and ended up getting outsold by a 9 year old system a majority of its shelf life (so far)

I have one and it s a damn fine Blu-Ray player. However I am not happy at all with the PS3 titles.

I think PS3 will hit its stride this year or in 2010. Sony planned for its consoles to have a ten-plus year life span, which was true with the PS1 and especially the PS2, which is still alive and kicking years after Nintendo killed Gamecube and Msoft pulled the plug on the original Xbox.

The PS3 will be around for a long time, more than enough time to catch up.

i hope they fired the IDIOT that decided to make the PS3 NON compatible with PS2 games...I think that alone made 1000's of people buy something else...or at least hold on to their PS2 for longer..

Ok I will say it again backwards compatible versions are no longer MADE.

Your right. Only way someone can get a backwards compatible ps3 is to get the original launch 60gb model. I can't remember if the 20gb model was backward compatible. Glad I got mine when it came out...not like I really play any ps2 games anymore, but at least I have the option too :monkey3

Let me guess...the o.p is an Xbox fanboy...
No doubt Sony were arrogant enough to assume they'd arrive late and blow the opposition away...but they came too late and this generation of gaming has taken a shift in direction which they clearly didn't see coming...
Still, Sony has the best system and BR is awesome...^^^^ microsoft, i'm happy with my ps3 and wii

See, that's the thing about the Wii--it's really not that great. At some point the sales are going to drop really far, just because all the hype will be gone and everyone will realize that it kinda sucks.

Being a Sony fan myself, even I have to admit the exclusives on the PS3 thus far are dissapointing for me. Really the only exclusives that really interest me are MGS4, God Of War 3 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. The lack of backwards compatability on a $400 + machine is also annoying. At the moment I mainly just want a PS3 for Blu-rays and since I don't have an HDTV yet Blu-rays dont really benefit me. So I'm just gonna wait for the price to drop another $100 or so before I consider picking one up.
