Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

Yeah, BUT. . .TFA was a total Star Wars knockoff. No doubt that's what Disney corporate wanted all along, and JJ/Kennedy et al. delivered. I can understand Disney having cold feet, even if it is an about face. Unfortunately, with Star Wars, you've had to pick your poison over the years--do you want a delusional has-been surrounding himself with sycophants and yes-men, producing what he sees as great art? Or do you want the biggest corporate machine around, pumping out "products" with the sole intent of maximizing profit and building theme parks around it? Pros and cons.

My answer is YES.

I'm very curious what the state of Avatar Land is at Walt Disney World now that they own SW and are fast-tracking the new attractions.

Basically... I'd hope they'd afford Kennedy the same leeway and respect they do the likes of Feige.

She can make a good movie. But can she sell you a toaster that burns an image of Forest Whitaker on your bread?

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

So apparently the changes/reshoots are significant enough that work on both the Marvel one shot and mini-series have been stopped, and the solicitation has been canceled for both books.

The plot thickens... (Except for maybe the plot of the actual movie if they're indeed making it funnier/softer [emoji57])

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

Yeah, I heard it was pretty bad about 3 weeks ago. I also heard things are not good with Edwards, understandably.
That there is a shadow director coming in for reshoots and that Disney are negotiating with Edwards to play ball and keep things looking rosy.
He has to get on a stage in a few weeks with Kennedy at Celebration. Some of this happened with JJ as well, but it didn't hit the media because JJ is a consummate PR guy.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

To JYE's post about tone, Star Wars has also got the nostalgic farm living Luke, funny robots, wise-cracking humor from Han, spitfire Leia, etc. I think I see what the producers are saying about the tone of Star Wars overall, and it's certainly not primarily one of dread and suspense, though that is obviously in it. It's first and foremost a fantasy adventure yarn. Seems like they're trying to fit Rogue One into that peg, though I'm not sure if it's needed or even appropriate.

This movie has Alan Tudyk, from FIREFLY... how in the world would it not be wise-cracking anyhow?

I mean hello?

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

I never intended on watching this movie. It doesn't affect me any. But Disney controlling Star Wars was never a good idea. The much praised TFA is just a ANH rip-off and the first apparently original movie that was made needs to be changed and conformed into the cookie-cutter image of Star Wars Disney has. The idea with these spin-offs was that they could break away from the formulas/tones/themes of the saga's regular episodes, no? I hope Gareth Edwards doesn't play ball and I hope he calls them out for what they are.

Why would he destroy his career like that?

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

Man the Disney bashing is getting old. People are mad because they are supposedly making it "lighter" when nobody has a clue just how "light" or "not light" it is in the first place. And Disney is only in it for the money.. well no **** Sherlock that's the whole point. Lucas was the same way that's why he kept all the licensing rights and put the SW image on every dang item he could in the 80's (there was Star Wars toilet paper got gods sake.) And I don't know about you guys but I don't go see crappy movies multiple times so if Disney really does want to make $ then they should be sure its a good movie. Would all you Disney bashers like the alternative? No new stories, No new characters, No new fans, No renewed interest in the franchise, No new collectibles? Do you want to but the 4000th Vader statue that looks exactly like the previous 3999? Or would you rather have Lucas with 15 more years of insanity try to do another trilogy? If my choices are nothing, Lucas or what Disney has done I'll take Disney every time.

I don't know about Disney "bashing", thing is we don't know if their interference is to help the movie creatively or financially or both. Edwards has not proven himself in this area at all. He may have turned in a dull and boring picture that Disney are genuinely trying to improve. Or he turned in a fantastic gritty wartime SW movie which isn't commercial enough for Disney to sell toys.

Lucas wasn't the same though? he was just bat-**** crazy in his own world. Yeah he loved cash the same as the next man, but he did bite the bullet to go all out there at times if he thought his vision (love it or hate it) dictated it. Sith for example was not made to make cash, it was dark, odd and extremely violent.
