lately my ps3 has been making slightly more noise than usual. nothing close to the sound of my 360.. but I just wanted to check with you guys if this normally occurs. I've owned the ps2 for over 2 years now and have been using it almost every day for several hours in the past 2 months. I keep it on a shelf, well ventilated and away from dust.. so thats not the problem.

my 60g packed in tonight midway though a cod cage match! just turned itself off and wont come back on with the yellow light flashing!

sony want £145 from me so that they can send me a refurbished model! im not happy obviously! anyone know if its possible to find someone independant who can fix my ps3 for me?

im gonna visit a few independant asian video game/pc stores down the west end and other places i know of to see if i can get it fixed ?

i think it depends on what model it is and when it was brought!?

they gave a few of my mates free repairs but that was down to the fact that they all had the released 40g's that came out with faults (im sure im right in saying alot of the 40g's from mid 2006 onwards were released with faulty components)

mine was a 3 year old 60g with expired warranty! so thats why they want to charge me i think!

anyway ive found an independant shop a few train stops from me that fixes the 'YLOD' as they put it (yellow light of death) problem while you wait in the shop for about £70 which takes about 40 minutes to fix! so im happy that i dont have to pay £145 for refurb'd PS! i just hope they can do it without erasing all the media i have on the hard drive!


SONY SUX!!!! what a cheek of them to charge people for faulty playstations! i could understand it if it was my fault!

I'm worried that my PS3 just took a turn for the worst. It turns on fine, but won't read any discs. I read some of you had this issue. Any advice on something I should try first before sending it to Sony? I read somewhere to restore the system back to factory settings (which I'm very skeptical about.)

Also, is it true that if you send it back, Sony sends you a refurbished system that is NOT your own???

Sounds like you are about to go through what I'm going through. There are many, MANY, defective blu-ray drives in PS3's floating around. So many that a class action lawsuit is being investigated.

You can try a system restore, but make sure your data is backed up first, and also know that it's a long shot that it will work.

And you are correct, Sony will send you a system other than the one you sent them with no data on it in return. I'm *still* waiting for mine. And it will cost you $150.

Went through the same thing awhile ago with my 3 year-old 60gig! Had to go the Sony route, though. Lost all my game saves. SONY sucks. I'll drink to that.

Well, I guess I'll try the system restore. I'll keep you updated. Thanks for the info. I guess this may be a good thing though as the semester is about to start and the last thing I need is a PS3 to distract me.

Just out of curiousity, why would a system restore be effective? Is it a software glitch that caused the malfunction?

I will say the one odd thing is that it worked last night when I played Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and today, I JUST bought GTAV and put it in the PS3 for the very FIRST TIME and this is when it happened. I think it is just merely a coincidence, but.....

That's what I was thinking as well. I guess it can't hurt, but I imagine the damage is done already.

Just got my (er, a replacement) PS3 back from Sony. I'm a little disappointed because this one has many scratches and scuffs while the one I sent in was in pristine condition.

I was a little afraid that my PSN purchases and Singstar songs wouldn't work on the new machine, but they do! The trick is to deauthorize your PS3 before you send it in. (Note - I replaced my upgraded hard drive with the original before sending it in and didn't have to restore from a backup, so your mileage may vary)

Now it's time to get me some Fat Princess!
