A waste of money IMO. How can it be "complete" when there are still new Star Wars stories and characters being realized in TV shows, games, comics, books, etc.? Star Wars is now ever-evolving, and every other year they'll have to come out with "The Latest and Greatest Must Have Edition" and people will continue to throw their money at it. Anything I want to know about Star Wars I either: A) Already Know or B) Google It

More power to those who want this though.

By that logic, ALL encyclopedias and dictionaries are a waste of money.

Well, in this day and age of instant information and the fact that portable storage devices can store an entire library's worth of material, they are. I've actually seen complete volumes of encyclopedias and other reference books tossed in dumpsters (not that I typically go digging through dumpsters or anything, but it's happening). Plus, actual encyclopedias serve to educate people on facts about our world, not some trivial science fiction fantasy land George Lucas dreamed up. I don't know about you, but I don't ever recall any college class being offered called Star Wars 101. Don't let me rain on your parade, dude. Just put me on ignore and knock yourself out with the encyclopedia. I'm saving my bookshelf space for rare classic leather bound literature. I'll bail out and let you all enjoy your future investment. :peace

your reply seems a bit dramatic? He was just offering an alternate argument, which does make sense...

"trivial science fiction fantasy land George Lucas dreamed up"....I agree with you it is "trivial", expecially given everything going on in the world these days, but the same could be send for anything on this site.

Does anyone know? Is this set puerly based on the 6 movies?:)

It looks like is goes into the EU. Heres the description at amazon

Product Description
THE DEFINITIVE REFERENCE GUIDE TO A SPACE FANTASY PHENOMENON

The Star Wars universe, much like our own, is constantly expanding. In the ten years since the publication of the Star Wars Encyclopedia, a lot has happened in that galaxy far, far away: four new feature films, a host of official original novels, comics, video games, and more. Now, thirty years of information on all things Star Wars–ranging from science and technology to history and geography, culture and biography to ecology and cosmology–has been supplemented with an entire decade’s worth of all-new material. Abundantly illustrated with full-color artwork and photos, and now in a new three-volume edition to accommodate its wealth of detailed entries, the Star Wars Encyclopedia encompasses the full measure of George Lucas’s creation.

Here’s just a sampling of what’s inside:
• character portraits of both the renowned (Luke Skywalker, Queen Amidala, Darth Vader) and the obscure (Tnun Bdu, Tycho Celchu, Bib Fortuna)
• the natives and customs of planets as diverse as Tatooine and Hoth, Dagobah and Kashyyyk
• the rituals, secrets, and traditions of Jedi Knights and Sith Lords
• a timeline of major events in Star Wars history, from the Clone Wars and the inception of the Empire to the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and the invasion of the monstrous Yuuzhan Vong

Scrupulously researched and written by leading authorities Stephen J. Sansweet, Pablo Hidalgo, Bob Vitas, and Daniel Wallace, this landmark work is the must-have centerpiece of every Star Wars library.

Well, first of all I don't think I'll be buying this. But I think you may be misunderstanding the way that most people will be using this kind of book. While you might occasionally want to know what planet Greedo was from or what company manufactured the Millennium Falcon, you're probably right that these are best left to Google. But I think most people wouldn't be using as an actual reference book, but rather as something to leaf through, looking at the pictures and reading any articles that might catch their eye. That's where having an actual book can be superior to using the net.

And I still think it's silly to criticize an encyclopedia because it can't cover things that might happen in the future. In the case of this book in particular, most people are only going to really care about the main 6 films anyway, and that's not going to be changing much.

Fair enough. You have a good point and I won't try to counter-argue. ;)

And please don't get me wrong. I'm as much a Star Wars geek as the next guy. A closet geek maybe, but a geek nonetheless. While I wouldn't trash this set of books if someone were to give it to me as a gift, it's just not something that tops my "must have" list. Cheers!

:chew Chewie Chew get busy one time! :chew

EDIT
: On second thought, I do need some new material to occupy me for about 30 minutes per session when I'm on the crapper making a deposit. Maybe I'll make my brother spend his money and buy this for me. :lol

I might would rather spend the money on this:

If you can't own every piece of SW merchandise, then having detailed pics of lots of them is the next best thing.
