Be interesting to see if Disney walks back on firing Gunn... can't really see how they could at this point. I had a very strong initial reaction when I read the story, but then seeing more context about how all this happened it seems pretty clear that Gunn has not tried to make excuses for what he wrote and that it was intended to be "shocking/attention getting" and has since apologized even before all of this happened. In that light it does seem like his firing was the wrong call.
I can still see Disney's stance, but you'd also think they had to have known about this prior to hiring him since it wasn't a big secret.

Yeah given the circumstances, I'm starting to think it was the wrong call to fire him too. However, I doubt Disney is going to re-hire him. Maybe if it were another studio he could have been re-hired. But Disney wants to keep a kid-friendly reputation, and hiring someone who has (even in the past) made jokes about pedophilia is probably akin to hiring a charged (not convicted) sex offender into a daycare.

I don't think Disney vet potential directors to such an extent that these historic tweets would come to light, but they may do after this. Whether it was right or wrong to fire him, there's no way they can re hire him now as it's all out in the open

It seems like Disney could have been vocal about their stance against Gunn's past comments without having to fire him. Something like "We were already aware of the alarming and tasteless tweets of a decade ago and only agreed to hire him after it became clear to us that Mr. Gunn had long since recognized how intolerable such tweets were. We believe that such behavior doesn't characterize the person and the artist that he is today and as long as that holds true we look forward to continuing our working relationship with him."
I don't know, it seems like they could have had it both ways by condemning the decade old comments while still allowing him to helm future projects. I mean his stamp will always be on the MCU anyway it's not like they going to strike the GotG from canon (though I suppose Thanos' on-screen finger snap certainly gives them an easy to do it if they did want to go that route.)

Yeah Disney played it safe on this one. Probably too safe, but I cannot blame them either.
By the way, it seems like some of the Avengers main cast have started unfollowing Gunn and the timing seems suspect (looked coordinated). Gunn getting rehired might not happen.

If Gunn is fired for what he did ten years then what's keeping them from booting RDJ for what he's done. What about Disney's own Mickey Mouse cartoons featuring blackface from the 1930's.

There are major differences between Gunn and your example.
1. Black Face Mickey, Nazi Donald and the other example of cartoons brought up were products of their age. Just about everyone involved with those decisions at the time are dead. It was also the popular opinion at the time. What Gunn said , was NOT the popular opinion , then or now. It was also done recently.
2. RDJ committed parole violations after drug conviction. He was sentenced , punished, and served his time. Rehabilitated (Americans love a comeback story) and started over.
Gunn can only apologize for what he did, and perhaps in a few year, he will be accepted as the comeback story.

I'd like to see the cast simply not honor their contracts and refuse to star in the third movie. That'd make for a great headline "Massive conglomerate sues movie stars for standing up for what they believe in"
It'd be one thing if Gunn actually possessed child porn, or was charged with a crime, or even had allegations made against him, but nothing happened. This was all about stupid tweets he made 5-10 years ago, prior to his involvement in the franchise. It's ridiculous that it went this far.
Obviously, Bautista seems pretty pissed about the whole thing. Pretty much the whole crew was offed in Infinity War, so it's not like they couldn't reasonably just get a whole new set of Guardians. At this point, Marvel has shown they can make a $100million+ movie with anyone, so it's not like it's that big of a deal.
Plus, I'd just like to see people stick it to Disney.

I am curious why? I mean stick to a company making fantastic family entertainment of a genre that has been ignored for decades prior to Disney getting hold of it?
A company attempting to protect it s investors from massive backlash from the public (who is really the one to blame here) , because people reposted he story so much?
Disney has no choice but to take the most severe course on topics like this. They literally HAVE to. The majority of stock holders demand it, the majority of Disney Facebooking Moms demand it, as does the ravenous press when they want a story.
What exactly should they have done? With a Billion dollar franchise, take a risk? What if something more sever DOES come to light? What then?
Maybe its easier for people to remember you are not anonymous on the Interwebs , and they should keep low brow, insulting , troll like behavior yo themselves. Least it cone back to haunt them one day. Society would be a nicer place as well....
