The likeness on zoro isn't that great either.... something about it doesn't look very human.

These just feel like HT rushed and put their B team on it. Hell zoro's katanas don't even appear to be metal when HT has made majority of them metal before.

Yeah something like a B team could definitely be true. As I found the sculptor and painter of both one piece figures:

So he has done everything in this case. In contrast, if you look at other recent hot toys figures, they are sculpted by entirely different people:

So it seems that they really did not use their A team and used someone else.
Or it is just bad luck for One piece

Ultimately, it is really stupid if Hot toys really handles this as low priority, because it is a major hit worldwide and a huge IP. And I guess collectors would be open to collecting new IP’s because people would like something else than superheroes once in a while? But Hot toys basically destroys the chance of people considering buying these figures, because especially Luffy is ugly.

I never watched the original show, but I did watch a trailer for this the other day and it... actually looks good? I don't normally give live action anime the time of day, but I think I'll check this out. Question: Is it appropriate for my 10 year old to watch with me? It looks like the kind of thing he and I would enjoy together.

It's abit gory at some points and it's abit more bloody than I expected. I think it's rated 15 so its likely unsuitable, but the story and action scenes are fun.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll watch a couple episodes to check it out on the gore front. I did let him watch Logan recently, so these standards are really more for keeping my wife happy.

If Logan is okay then this will be perfectly fine. The source is "shonen" so the tone and themes of the show fits the teen/pre-teen demographic.

If they make anyone else. Sanji and Nami and Ussop and even Mihawk would be most wanted.

Viva Lai is definitely not a B team artist lol.

But aren't the other sculptors better? So maybe this is indeed back luck. And to be honest I'm new to the Hot toys game. So I'm not aware of all the sculptors. However, I noticed that all the great headsculpts recently were sculpted by other sculptors than Viva Lai .

Viva did Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch version) before he was scouted by Hot Toys to make their Dr Strange figures. He was probably the first non Korean artist to start working for them after their run of really good of sculpts from the Korean artists. Of course now the artists lineup has expanded to include some from China too like luluyo, etc.

The figures that he sculpted for are Buzz Lightyear, all Dr Stranges in MoM, Kang, Peacemaker, Morbius, Pennywise and most likely both Avatar and Bruce Wayne and the glass armory figures.

I don't think you can just say sculptors are better than another just because of a dud, because most of the sculptors do have a dud or so in their many years of works. There could be various factors such as licensing issues, artist refusing to sign off on their current likeness, or license holders/Hot Toys interferrence. We will never know but there's always a chance for it to improve before the end product.

Interesting, thanks for the info. Yeah I'm actually more of a PVC anime figure (non articulated) collector guy. So I'm completely new to this stuff. At the anime figure business you actually have sculptors with their own style such as sculpting mouths and eyes in their own style. Like they are doing 100% their best to showcase their own style and that they have a unique sculpting style. However, most of the time this ruins the image of the original character.

So at first I thought this could be the case with Viva. But now I guess it is a completely different story at the 1/6 business. Here they do 100% their best to sculpt a character or actor to their likeness. And the dr.strange mom figures are great! So I guess luffy is indeed just a dud for now, until he improves the sculpt.

It looks to me like Zoro is built with the same “Han Solo” body which ended up being one of the best bodies Hot Toys ever made. (In my opinion) I’ll be glad to add a few more of those to my collection when the break-downs start showing up on evilbay..

It's not the Han body entirely the chest will most likely be new and a bit more fit then what the han body was. The only thing that is the same are the arms but I'm definitely interested to see how it looks in hand.

These two are the first HT figures I've ordered in a few years, as I've been done with the MCU since Endgame. I'd started watching the anime, and watched this and fell in love with it. I hope they make Nami, but I would buy all the main crew + Shanks (I love Shanks, he's my favorite).

I definitely think that all the Strawhats will be eventually made. Maybe not soon. However, when thinking long term, I think that the rest of the crew will be made over the course of several seasons. As the show is a major hit. Although, of course I hope they will announce the pre-order of all the Straw hats this year, that would be even better!

One can hope, but Hot Toys isn’t known for going deep into lines, outside of Marvel, DC and Star Wars.

Maybe a 3rd party company would make what HT doesn’t.

If they make Nami that's when I'll preorder, still waiting for their Jinx LoL reveal 🤞
