Damnnnnn....that sounds pretty sucky. You'd think after CW he'd get a surge where he was going to have badass feats.

The guy next to him is Nathan Edmondson, a comic book writer. There was a "scandal" a while back and everybody said he was a terrible human being, based on, something, he did, but nobody ever came forward with proof. It was around the time Marvel gave Red Wolf a solo, and folks were angry a white man (him) was writting, so you can guess the reason for all the accusations. Anyway, everything I've read from him is pretty great, and considering he worked in the intelligence community before, his soldier/spy stories are the best. After that whole thing he hasn't done anything, so I pressume he got blacklister, but his indie books got tv and movie deals, so I hope it works out.

Re: Marvel's The Black Panther - article link w. possibly mildy spoilery tidbits

So, Marvel gave the press a tour of the studios and a bit of pre-screening recently - am sure there is an embargo, but Vulture.com has a few bits of what they saw....

Black Panther doesn’t look like any of the other Marvel movies, and it shouldn’t if it wants to pay proper tribute to the impact of the first black superhero in mainstream American comics.

(For myself - am not into the politics/race issues etc. re this film - am in the "if it's a good film, it's a good film" camp; and this article makes a crack on generic white superheroes which IMO wasn't necessary - IMO so what and I bet not one woman in this film has hairy armpits either or one guy is ugly or really short w. a beer gut; a good actor is a good actor etc.) Anyway:

It's just a stupid PC thing to do these days.
I mean, does it even matter after Spawn, Blade, X-Men's Storm, War Machine, Falcon and freakin' Luke Cage?
John Stewart and Static? John Diggle? Nope, never happend...

Yea I don't think the characters being black will mean all that much. It will just be seen as another comic book movie.

True, especially over the long term. Press reporting filming has wrapped - wow, that seemed quick to me - tho not sure that means so much. E.g., sure there will be re-shoots here and there, ADR, etc. But (apparently) Marvel will be at SDCC and possibly the first peeks of BP will drop then.

Didn't you know? Coates is #woke. He writes about rape camps and drops African words in sentences written in english (without bothering to add the <translated from [...]> bit). He writes about Womyns Marches and ****. From what I've heard, they're combining Hudlin's and Coates' runs, and not really touching the Priest one, apart from Ross and maybe the Techno-Jungle. It's gonna be less "bad-ass warrior king who fends off aliens and conquerors" and more "here's some social commentary by a literal king who sits on a golden throne, in his golden palace".

This might be the one Marvel movie I don't see in the theater

I'll see it 'cause I love me some BP, but I don't have high hopes. When I saw those pics and learned that a young T'Challa would get some education at the US, it all started to fall apart for me. Wakanda being an isolationist country is a huge part of the mythos, so just having T'Challa go anywhere else, at such a young age, is a big turn off. The BP IP is ripe with potential, but all anybody wants to write are "muh politics" stories*. And I'd take the quirky Kirby run over them any day.

*Yeah, Priest's run also had politics, but he knew how to balance them. He knew how to make a story both fun/exciting and not straight up superhero-y.

But. seems like re CW movie and T'Challa's apparently progressive father, sending T'Challa to be educated in the U.S. would make sense, and also lay the groundwork for a group of rebels is Wakanda to mistrust this progressive king and son. IMO you can't be an "advanced" culture/country and be isolationist/racist at the same time - one negates the other.

Re all the politics, race, etc. IMO the elephant in the room is that any blockbuster these days has to have a GLOBAL appeal - e.g. themes that would appeal to everyone. Get too bogged down in politics and/or U.S.-specific issues and it 1)probably doesn't translate well to other languages; 2) boring; 3) the global audience has no reason to care if it's nothing they can relate to.

Also, wasn't BP also supposed to help set up IW? Maybe part of this film is T'Challa or other from Wakanda becoming aware of the Thanos threat - in the comics wasn't Wakanda one of the few that was able to mount a defense?

Hope so, 'coz maybe the MCU is being really secretive - for me the synopsis of the film sounded by-the-numbers...

Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk."

Well, yeah. Guess it wouldn't be too interesting if "After the events of Captain America: Civil War" the grieving T'Challa returned home, met a nice girl (who was a Nobel-prize winning physician who heals the Winter Soldier's fragmented mind) and gets married with all of Wakanda happily toasting the royal couple. Thanks to advanced stealth technology, T'Challa simply vanishes his country and sits out the Infinity War.":monkey3

Oh that guy? Not looking forward to it so more anymore then.

I mean if there was a chance to depict a WE WUZ KANGS civilization it was this one, who would've thought they would want to blow it, color me shocked.

T'Challa has had adventures outside of the US, but it was only after he joined the Avengers to spy on them. By making him go to the US as a teenager, they're clearly setting up a "damn, my people are opressed minorities in the US of A" type of commentary, which is something the BP movie doesn't need. T'Challa's ancestors literally let other black folks starve in front of them, outside their gaitn walls, 'cause they wanted to keep their racial purity. Ever since Hudlin writers have been trying to use BP for social commentary, when the guy is literally black Doctor Doom, but good. Tons of stories go down the drain 'cause everybody wants to be #woke.

Old school Wakanda was whimsical, but modern Wakanda is literally WE WUZ KANGZ. It doesn't bother me though, 'cause it's fictional, and I actually like T'Challa. But yeah, the flick will surely be a mix of WWK and "muh social politics of the US". Having a Wakandan care about African Americans is like having a German care about the plight of Slavs. Ethnicity trumps skin colour as far the Wakandans are concerned, and this carries over to the real world, really.

I'm looking for any excuse I can to skip cbm's in the theater these days so it looks like I found one for BP.

GotG2 is out in a few days, but I'm not feeling it, really. Same goes for JL and the others.
