I think Lucas' reputation suffers from extreme polarities. He gets derided as a hack and ****** filmmaker by one group, and then elevated to near god status by others. As always, the truth lies somewhere in-between. Whether it was by his sole vision alone or through the saving grace of others, he, in his youth gave the cinema two of the most profoundly cherished films ever created. As with a lot of Artists in their waning years, he has lost his touch and passion, and the result was the PT.
Sure, the PT's aren't very good, but there is some value in them, or at least two of them. The real animosity comes from what the PT's could have been rather than what they are.

Agreed, and that's coming from someone who likes the prequels.
At the same time I feel prequel-hating is overrated. ROTS is a damn good movie even if Sam Jackson is painfully wooden and the absurd amount of CGI is tough to digest.
I think AOTC is the weakest of the three. Hayden's performance is ****ing amateur hour from start to finish. He finally starts to work in ROTS but in AOTC he's just not there yet and the crap dialogue doesn't help. Even McGregor can't sell the dialogue in AOTC.
McDiarmid's performance and Palpatine's arc are perfect though. Its the one plot line that was well-written and well-acted in all three.
Lucas should have honestly just written the story treatments for these films because its a fantastic story and had someone else write the screenplays and direct them. The blatant leap in quality from ANH to ESB showcased how hiring a strong auteur like Kershner to bring Lucas' material to life was the best recipe for a great Star Wars movie.
As it stands for me:
The Phantom Menace (1999) 7.5/10
Attack of The Clones (2002) 7/10
Revenge of The Sith (2005) 9/10
A New Hope (1977) 9/10
The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 10/10
Return of The Jedi (1983) 9/10
The Force Awakens (2015) 9.5/10

Ehhhh. Wasn't familiar with the other guy but Giacchino doesn't really appeal to me that much. Not a fan of his Star Trek stuff.

Love his Lost work years ago. Desplat scored Zero Dark Thirty and the last two Harry Potters. Bloody good composer too.

Maybe the producers/studio simply felt the music composed didn't fit well with the tone or feel of the film? That is, if the score had even been composed yet. Sure it's not the first time something like that has happened.

Anybody remember when Ang Lee's Hulk was leaked before the movie was finished? The studio replaced the original composer with Danny Elfman late into the project in almost the same way. I enjoyed the work product version more because it had the original composers music instead of Elfman's(who I like), and it had more daring choices at the time.
