Figure is looking very good, IMO. He had a broken piston which I'm sure will be addressed. Unfortunately broken pistons was also a very common trait of the Tama version.

For the life of me I don't know how both Sideshow and Bandai/Tama got the eyes upside down (the triangle made by the 3 light sources is supposed to point downward, not up)

I won't be replacing my Tama, but looking at these (and other) early photos, I'm pretty confident that if you put both of them on a shelf 3 to 5 feet away, a significant number of people (not necessarily members of this board) would pick the Sideshow version. I think the majority would probably first say they look the same (doh!)

Tough call as I'm an armchair critic on this one, having seen neither the Tama nor SSC in-hand and maybe unlikely to. I like the belly wires on the Tama better, and dislike the weathering on the SSC, but undecided on the rest. In the photo above the SSC seems to have better proportions? Could just be the pistons.

The two big things that stick out for me: The hands and of course scale with R2 (which we know is too small to begin with).

I'm wondering if the piston in the above pic was broken out of the box or through arm manipulation?

I think they both look good and want to order them but am still holding out hope for Hot Toys versions. I may be kicking myself later but that's how collecting goes.

I recently decided I want Artoo, and Threepio doesn't look bad. I think it's safe to say HT won't be making either anytime soon, so no point in holding out.

I'm sure HT will be making them, prolly two years before they are shipping. Will get those as well. Hope they are clean versions.

The weathering does not look bad from far away. I do wish it was applied with more finesse. It really does seems like they are tampos or something versus hand-painted in some areas.

I wonder if this can accually sit down. I love my tama, but 3po needs to sit his ass down in obi wans house

Best,

Robert

This looks pretty good, but reminds me a bit of the Clone Wars version of 3PO due to the slightly rounder head and overemphasized nose/mouth. I ended up canceling despite wanting to check this out for myself in hand, maybe at a later date I can grab it.

Overall the pics look very promising and Sideshow has done solid work on their droids so far.

The weathering is definitely heavy handed; but that's workable. Hands seem a bit over-sized, but not terrible and it seems like the chest is a bit too narrow. But I might be wrong about the chest, just looks a bit odd to me.

But I'm pleased with how he turned out and will be adding him to the collection.

I like it. And the weathering is obviously deliberate as they didn't chrome the figure properly* so this masks that a lot. But it works.

(*Incidentally, 3P0 is TFA is oddly not chromed, either. Very odd decision. He looked way too matte and almost plastic, imho. Small nit, overall, but it definitely stuck out the first time I saw it).

I had not noticed the size of the hands until Pixel pointed it out. They are big but not too distracting.

Still looking forward to this figure. As a few others have commented, 3PO and Leia "should" wrap up my OT collection.

I do wonder how tall 3PO is compared to HT's Luke. Based on the pics above, he does appear rather tall.

The height looks good depending on what ref you use to support it...

Here's a still...

Looks pretty good until you look at the classic publicity shots (where R2's feet are raised a bit to roll thru sand)...
