Wow! Big Hellboy fan?? Fan of the comics or just the films? Personally I like 2 much better. Something about 1 just never clicked with me.

Huge Helllboy fan. Both of the comics and the films. I enjoyed both movies, but the first one is much truer to the source material and I think overall is just a stronger representation of Hellboy and the world he lives in. It feels like a more rounded and focused film. The color palate is more striking, the musical score is more powerful, and I much prefer nearly every creative element it employs. The ending shot is still one of the most beautiful images ever committed to film, in my opinion of course.

Hellboy 2 was also great, with some incredible creatures and improved action, but I found it a little too silly and unfocused. Not to mention it radically departs from the comics and really feels more like it belongs to the world of Pan's Labyrinth, rather than Hellboy. When I spoke with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola a number of years back, he more or less agreed, and admitted he was less than thrilled with the second film, himself. That movie is entirely Guillermo del Toro's vision, and strays from the original universe quite a bit. I do still love it though, and I believe Mignola has warmed to it since then as well.

1 has the better plot and villains imo, but 2 was more well made, seemed like it had a bigger budget, better effects. 2 has some cornball cheese that really hurts it but it's slightly better than the first overall.

The original has the plot and villains from the original miniseries- Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. The second film's baddies and plot were all entirely made up and not from the comics whatsoever. I agree that the cornball cheese hurts the second film. I'm just less forgiving of it than most.

That is how I feel about Blade. I just love the story of the first film and the gritty reality feel. However the second had a better budget and the action scenes were top notch...however Blade 1 has the Bloodbath opening which is as good as anything in comic movies.

Blade 2 is also directed by Guillermo del Toro. :D Best of the Blade series, for my money.

I love the Hellboy movies and cartoon movies, but surprisingly have never picked up the comics, I'm a huge Mignola fan which makes it doubly weird. If I were to pick up something Hellboy to read, what would you recommend? I'd much rather get something in GN or Compendium format rather than picking up individual issues. Also, is there anything with Screw on Head in it, or is he just a one shot?

I never pick up individual issues of anything. Drives me crazy.
All the Hellboy stories, long and short, are pretty much collected in a handful of volumes in trade paperback format. Volume 1 is Seed of Destruction, it's a little flawed, but decent, especially if you're interested in seeing the origins of Hellboy, the introductions of all the main characters, and starting at the genesis of the whole thing.

Volume 2 is Wake The Devil, and here the writing and tone hit much more of a stride and all the elements come together far better. For instance it's here the Hellboy character begins to strike that balance of dry humor and morbid sarcasm, as he battles off some really nasty vampires. It's one of the best.

Volume 3 is The Chained Coffin and Others. It's essentially a collection of shorter stories, unlike the first two books, and you get much more variety for your time and money. It's one of my favorites.

Volume 5: The Conqueror Worm, is also great and is a personal favorite of mine. It's just so bizarre and fun. Very pulpy and spooky with lots of nazis, evil scientists, and giant Lovecraftian monsters to go around.

I'd recommend any of the above, especially Wake The Devil and The Conqueror Worm. The volumes really do not require being read in order until later in the series, at around Volumes 6-11 or so. At that point I'd suggest reading in order if you chose to follow the character that far.

The Amazing Screw-On Head was an unrelated book/character by Mignola. He doesn't ever appear in the Hellboy universe, though I wouldn't be against the idea. He would fit right in!

Hope that helps! :wave

Here's my list. Other than the first three, I like the rest pretty interchangeably.

My top twelve:
The Mark of Zorro (1940): The prototype. Also my favorite western.

Superman (1978): The first modern, serious attempt at a superhero film. Still hasn't been topped.

Batman (1989): Bob Kane and Bill Finger's grim golden age icon brought to life with style.

Watchmen (2009): Beautifully shot, with the best comic book source material in the world.

Spider-Man 2 (2004): Still stands as one of Marvel's very best.

Iron Man (2008): Took a page from Batman Begins' formula and made it better with a charismatic lead.

The Avengers (2012): Had every right to be a hot mess, but came out more enjoyable than it deserved to be.

Batman Begins (2005): A modern genre classic.

Superman II (1981): Kneel before Zod.

X-Men (2000): Before Christopher Nolan did his thing, Bryan Singer took an outlandish comic book world, filled with more rainbow spandex than a pride parade, and made it grounded and relatable.

The Dark Knight (2008): Universally praised for a reason.

Superman Returns (2006): A masterpiece (I'm serious!) If you want an uber-violent video game, look elsewhere. This character study chronicles the cultural icon facing an existential crisis. Not what people wanted, or expected, but something rich, moving and beautifully made if you give it a chance (with the right mindset.)
