I've previously dismissed Khev's sentiment that RO was the only "prequel" he needed.

But I've been thinking lately that when "Star Wars" first came out, the opening sequence was designed to look like it had picked up from a cliffhanger ending the week before, so from that point of view RO *is* the prequel.

Maybe that's what John Knoll was thinking when he first conceived the movie, rather than making just another explainer based on a throwaway line.

(I still dismiss Khev's sentiment BTW :))

The only thing about rogue one that sucked is disney retconing jyn erso as the savior of the rebels, the sole reason they blew up the death star, thereby diminishing lukes contribution. Ill admit she did do alot but without that Perfect shot death star is still around and jyn erso contribution is worthless. Thats like saying phil jackson won all the championships michael jordan had nothing to do with it

Watched this again a few days back on 4K disc. Hard to believe we're approaching four years since the theatrical release already and it's still just as awesome, especially that jaw-dropping third act. Wow, so good.

“The strongest stars have hearts of kyber”

Rogue one is By far disneys best Star wars movie. Its crazy to think how hot they started off with tfa then rogue one. They really fooled us into thinking they knew what they were doing. Talk about taking a nose dive off a cliff fast- its like kk last her god damn mind sometime during the filming of rogue one and never got it back lol. Obviously a little bit of success went straight to her head- she should have listened to churrit- his quotes should have been plastered all around the story groups walls- His character embodies the essence of star wars and what makes it great in general-

Great hot toys figure too

Boring, dull, and forgettable characters who met a proper end.

Want a better story, read the Death Star novel.

Harsh, if you like star wars for jedi and lightsaber battles i can see why you find it boring. That was the only thing i found myself missing.

How can you not like “i am one with the force the force is with me“ i love churrit or even that badass vader scene. The only character i didnt like was cassian and thats cause of the beginning when he just killed that rebel/citizen to save his own ass. I will admit though that its not a movie i can watch all the time but when i do feel like watching it I enjoy it.

Rogue one arguably is the best. But I agree, it isnt a very good movie.

The characters were trash, and it starts throwing stuff in the third act unearned. The script isn't even clever, including them at the base trying to do something (get the plans? honestly can't remember.) It is the only movie I can recall I fell asleep twice at home watching it. It has war porn for the general audiences.

But yes, the characters are the worst of any star wars movie. I think if this movie was used as cut scenes in a video game, it would be solid though. Just not all put together at the same time, have some entertaining video game play in-between.

Lets be honest, RLM sums up the movie best.

[...]

Really?

It's not that this film is above criticism, but how do you tell a story within a well-known fictional universe within a well-known specific time frame without using familiar settings and trappings?

You don't make a WWII movie without Allied and Axis soldiers slugging it out with equipment and weapons appropriate to the era.

There's some calculated fan service in the film but their shrill clowning is a bit over the top, if they're looking to criticize the film. Not a bad impression of psycho fans though, I'll give 'em that.

Poorly developed? Shallow? Maybe. The worst? Not by a long shot. :lol

I mean if the characters are poorly developed and shallow as you note, how can you call it a long shot they are not the worst? That would sound like a contender to me.

Or is the argument your making is that characters in star wars are so poor and terrible, that the characters in Rogue One are still pretty good for Star Wars.

I actually meant it when I said "maybe". An argument may be made that they're shallow or poorly developed, but it's a 'Dirty Dozen' war flick; taking that context into account I'm not expecting nuance and depth, to be honest.

The crew in Rogue One had one job: get the plans, get killed.

I do think there are definitely worse characters across eleven films even when you take context into account. Characters that were meant to be more complex, or sympathetic, or significant...that either behaved inexplicably, did nothing to further the plot, took us out of the film completely or whom we just didn't care about.

Star Wars is littered with those characters, to your last point. It's a bunch of very expensive B movies with questionable writing.

I think that is a good point. I mean ultimately, most of Star Wars is guilty pleasure, so reviewing these movies on a basis of being a quality movie could be somewhat futile.

The ESB might be the one movie that probably is a 'good' movie. It isn't pandering or filled with fan service or dumb action beats. It evolves its characters in complex and unpredictable ways. Their feels like real losses when it happens. The acting is solid. The tone at times feels lighthearted, but there is a current of darkness and dread in the background. The action feels well choreographed, and done in interesting ways.

Rogue One to me is like an unoriginal war movie. Nothing I haven't seen a dozen times. The problem is the characters are not memorable. So the only thing I am left with is some ships and weapons that look like Star wars. It just is executed so poorly, even if filmed competently and the CGI good.

If it took real chances, or built some strange and driven characters, I would be signing up for it. Without characters, or purpose, or concern or fear, I have no interest in rewatching the movie.

Chances, that is what is needed. Mandalorian started exploring that. But I am worried season 2 will be adding Boba Fett and Tusken Raiders, and we lose the stepping stones of EXPANDING the Universe. Not recycling the same 20 things over and over again.

It is like in another 5 years we get a new Star Trek movie, and they have Khan as the villain. It is like can we explore other things, or go to a new place? Maybe I am asking too much from corporate popcorn with artifical flavoring, which I agree is probably true as well.
