Halfway through the campaign now. 321 orders. I'm not sure if it's going to make it. If not is that the end of the Doctor Who range or is there still hope for someone like Davison or Pertwee? Only having 8 of 14 Doctors made would be annoying.

I wonder if this is just the ceiling of how many people are willing to commit to buy a product from BCS without seeing the finished item from production first. I know that the Thunderbirds Launchpad finished at a similar number.

There could be second wind at the end of the month once people have had their payday (I know we've talked about how people don't have to pay full price immediately, but you'd be surprised at how many people think that you do). I'm sure there will be, regardless, a flutter of people who join the campaign in the final days.

It is strange though how it has completely stalled in the past week despite a lot of excitement on the Big Chief Facebook page about the future of the line and even the 3D print out of the alternate head.

Really hope it pulls through.

They need to get that smiling sculpt painted up and put on the figure pronto. They shold have done this before going live with the order.

I have to say I will be very upset if this doesn’t happen. :gah: Although I have to say BCS have not stated that 500 is the minimum green light number. It is a target. I would expect the incentivised target would be around 400, with the remaining 100 going out at the full published RRP. Surely there has to be a 40 day target that is a break even numberbelow 500 otherwise all 500 would be sold on an incentive basis reducing profitability.

Yeah it's definitely stalled out. I said before I was afraid it wouldn't even hit 400, but now even 375 seems like a stretch!

From FB comments it appears a lot of people outside the UK were confused by the VAT and thought this was costing a lot more, so that probably didn't help. Not sure why BCS doesn't spell that out more clearly on the website.

But of course it could be that this is still a new Doctor and there just aren't a huge number of 1/6 DW collectors out there. As I doubt Capaldi would have sold 500 in the first 40 days either.

Yeah here's hoping. Maybe they could cut back on some of the accessories to save cost, or even have only the one smiling sculpt instead of both.

Ultimately the whole launchpad idea seems flawed to me, as 40 days is a really small window when it comes to 1/6 collecting, and there are a ton of figures I own now that I had no interest in when they were initially released, or didn't have room in the budget for at the time.

I'm confident that there will be an influx of orders near the end, whether it is a big enough influx, however, remains to be seen.

I still think they should be pushing for publicity a bit harder. I also think that, with permission, they should have put that video shot by the YouTube blogger (sorry, I forget the name) that showed the prototype Thirteenth Doctor on their launchpad page, or at the very least a link to it, as frankly the figure looked a lot better in that video than it does in their own in-house photography. Regardless, I just hope it make enough of a number to be deemed viable, because I still harbor a desire to have all the Doctors. Whittaker may not be a personal favourite, so far at least, but neither is Davison for me, and I really want him, too. And all the rest. :lol

I actually still think the classic Doctors will do better via this kind of scheme. They sold 500 Hartnells via their site, and another 200 on top of that to retail, so if they can shift 700 Hartnells I can't imagine they won't move 500 Pertwees, Troughtons or even Davisons, Colin Bakers and McCoys. People who buy a Tom Baker may well just want a Tom Baker, but those who buy a Bill Hartnell, to my mind at least, seem highly likely to want all the other classic Doctors as well. At least that is what I continue to cling to, anyway.

Eventually selling through a run is one thing, selling through all the run in 40 days is another.

I keep holding on to hope whenever Doctor Who figures are concerned, but I'm only just holding on by my fingertips right about now...

As a backer for the Thunderbirds launchpad, this is somewhat of a relief that a brand that is 100 times more active has plateaued at the same amount. It demonstrates that it’s maybe more just a limitation on the launchpad model itself.

It does just leave Big Chief in an awkward position. I’m sure this would cover their costs as far as production goes and they could sell another 150+ through the traditional method. It’s just awkward as if they accepted this result, no one will take future launchpad targets seriously.

I completely get their predicament though. This is a working capital intensive business, and the problem is that many products will take a huge investment and then sit in warehouses for months/years until they make back their investment and free-up more cash for new releases. People forget that when they stomp their feet and complain about the pace at which we get new figures.

Yeah I do sympathize with BCS, as it's clear they want to find a way to keep producing these figures and get them to the fans, but so far nothing really seems to be working for them.

Of course if they did go ahead and produce all 500, I'm sure they would have no problem eventually selling out. Since there's bound to be a lot more interest once people see the final product or more people gradually become aware of it.

This is why they should have set an honest and realistic minimum production target which covered costs and guaranteed production (and hopefully a little profit), as well as an instant green light/sold out target (which for this would be 500), that way potential supporters/buyers have all the relevant information going in, and confidence would be higher because we would all know what the real/critical target was, rather than being left in the dark with just BCS's preferred but unlikely and unrealistic best case scenario of pre-selling the entire run to go by.

The current set up just seems unlikely to ever result in any sell outs, particularly from a company that seems oddly reluctant to aggressively market these launchpad releases and actively try to drum up awareness and additional sales.

I just want them to find a way to get these things made that balances delivering quality product with not putting themselves out of business.

I think this is a massive contributing factor given that their female character track record is okay to average at best and the recent debacle with the Bond figs. Plus, BCS collectors are waiting two+ years on figures they've paid for. Couple this with the very mixed reaction to "New-new-Who" last season and I think you've largely got who's willing to play ball.

I'm not trying to stir the pot, because admittedly, I have not watched it so I can't cast a lick of judgement. But, if you look at where the venn diagram overlaps for for a group that A) Likes Dr. Who, B) more specifically likes this new season/Doctor, and perhaps the biggest difficulty, also D) collects 1/6 and has faith in preproduction BCS, I think that cross section realistically is smaller than expected.

On top of that, and I don't mean to stereotype, but whatever casual audience that may want a 1/6 13 will likely just go get the Barbie. We are an extremely niche part of a fan base. So they're not tagging in the expectedly/likely (though not always, all things considered) female audience in that regard that may have joined the show recently.

Yeah I do sympathize with BCS, as it's clear they want to find a way to keep producing these figures and get them to the fans, but so far nothing really seems to be working for them.

I agree. I think they would sell the 500 run inevitably, but that's a realistic number in the end. The question now is if they are willing to double down on launchpad in the sense that if it doesn't meet it's goal, then the project is bonked; in other words "the audience has spoken and we will not fund the project".

I feel like if they go ahead and do the 500 run, then they are setting themselves up for failure simply because there's no faith in the launchpad platform then. Didn't meet your goal? Oh well, BCS will do it anyway.

I suppose the alternative is that they offer the figure at a higher price if it doesn't meet the 500 quota to compensate. But how many backers would you lose then? Offer the head, outfit, accessories alone and let you bash it?

Yeah if they were to suddenly change the terms or raise the price they'd probably have so many people drop out that the whole project would collapse immediately.

And yeah that Venn diagram sounds pretty accurate. Especially when it comes to 1/6 collectors who are into DW in general, as I very rarely see people showing off those figures on the major FB pages I follow.

The free worldwide shipping they are offering is nice but I would rather have the old 10 month payment plan they used to have. That made buying these figures much less of a financial burden and I'm sure other people took advantage of that too and not having that option anymore probably hurts the preorder numbers now.

The biggest problem is the long delays of previous figures, the inconsistent quality of previous figures and not showing all of the accessories for this. It boggles the mind that they put this up without having the smiling sculpt done, painted and on the figure. The neutral one is fine but I and I'm sure a lot of people will display this with the smiling sculpt. I wish they had delayed the preorder until that was done and used this time to help build up hype and advertise the figure. Do a behind the scenes video showing it off and explaining the Launch Pad, how it works and what the benefits of it are and reassure us that this figure won't take 2+ years to be released.

It's frustrating that we might not get this figure and this might be the death of the Doctor Who line because this campaign was rushed out the door too early and not explained properly. Big Chief has put out some excellent figures and I commend them for doing more niche properties but they're marketing and communication is terrible.

Like I said, they should have not went live with it until they showed a fully painted proto of the smiling headsculpt.

Sadly I'm starting to suspect that the Troughton that I'm currently kitbashing might be the only Doctor I see this year (Who knows when Eight will finally arrive...). :(
