Johnny Depp To Headline Wally Pfister’s Sci-Fi Epic Transcendence

Working with Christopher Nolan seems to be a nice perk as The Dark Knight Rises and Inception director of photography Wally Pfister has nabbed quite a big name for his directorial debut. Previously we only knew that the project was a sci-fi movie, but no title or cast was in place yet. Now a press release from Alcon Entertainment has announced that Johnny Depp will lead the film Transcendence, which will begin shooting early next year. Warner Bros. is distributing the film (no surprise) and the script comes from new writer Jack Paglen, developed by Straight Up Films, who will also produce Pfister's first venture as director.

All we know about the project now is that it has been described as in the vein of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Inception. The story centers on a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness. Depp will play a husband who gets sucked into the computer. Sounds a little like TRON to us, but there's probably a lot more to the story. I wouldn't be surprised if Pfister is as secretive as Nolan after working with the filmmaker on seven different films, spanning all the way back to Memento in 1999. The two have crafted some of the most beautiful images and intriguing stories in cinema over the past 15 years, so it will be interesting to see what Pfister has learned from Nolan over that time span.

In addition to Depp, THR says Noomi Rapace, Christoph Waltz and either Tobey Maguire or James McAvoy are in talks for roles as well. Pfister is obviously excited to work with Depp (and we're glad to hear another Pirates of the Caribbean isn't coming first) as the first-time director says, "Johnny Depp is one of the most charismatic, talented actors imaginable. I'm thrilled, and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny. He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative." Depp and Pfister working on a sci-fi film? Sounds good to me.

Hater's will hate. :lol

Meanwhile Nolan will keep pumping out classics :yess:
I'm sure Wally's learnt a ton about direction under Nolan so I have really high hopes for this!

Appalling.

Who's Wally Fister? Never heard of him.

The story centers on a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness? Never heard of anything like that before, sounds original. Transcendence is another name for Rizes. Johnny Derp and John Connor and Peter Parker? THIS SOUNDS LIKE CRAP.

I hope this bombs and is considered an appalling piece of filmmaking. That will show that pretentious piece of ****.

Then again, he did seem pretty nice on the sets . . but eh, he looks like he's always getting a whiff of dirty underwear. Every expression he makes with his face makes it seem like he's miserable or disgusted. Probably has something to do with seeing sub par films I reckon. If it wasn't for Batman, I wouldn't care. Oh, this isn't Batman? I don't care. He did make some pretty cool soft core porn back in the 90s that I fapped to many, many times. Probably more times than Batman. Cinematography Tits > Cinematography Batman. Wonder why a person who filmed porn would be so pretentious and so highbrow?

He's got a cute daughter though. I'd pork her then have him film me doing it with a nice epic Hanz Simmer score.

**** off, masterBayfor(mer).:lecture

At least Bay won't trash another man's work in a public forum. Wally has no class, and is a stuck up doosh. :lecture

Nolan is the best. He's a good man. I hope he keeps dragging Wally to Michael Bay movies.

Wally didn't totally trash The Avengers, though. From a visual standpoint, he said it was appalling to him, and I'd assume that you probably become more critical when you work in that field. Not to mention, I'd have no problem calling the guy out for being a **** if he didn't have the skills and the cred to back up his argument. I've seen nothing but good work consistently from Mister Pfister, so he can say whatever the **** he likes.

^ No. No he can't. It's called tact. And since this industry is so tightly woven, he has no right to call someone's work appalling.

He's always been like this.

Yeah, he did. He called it appalling, he didn't say it was a stinky pile of **** that I wouldn't let my dog lick. I think that you're confusing the phoniness of Hollywood with tact. Everything said has to be nice and pretty to match up with the rest of the glitz and glamor, otherwise, you're an *******.

It's someone's work. It's not something trivial. It's someone's pride and joy they spent working on for many years, putting time and effort into it, and then seeing someone you admire call it "appalling" is ****ing terrible. No matter how you slice it. It's rude. And...well, appalling.

There's a better way to say something like that.

"I didn't care too much for the Avengers. It wasn't my kind of film. Whedon (or anyone) did a good job here, but I felt it was lacking in it's cinematography. It worked for the film. But I disagreed with the choices the cinematographer used.I would've done it a bit differently...haha. I've never been a big blockbuster fan, even though I've been working on them for 8 years now! Haha(insert laugh).

That's what you would've said, that doesn't mean that's what Pfister would've said; and his points were accurate, some of those shots were more focused on the elaborate sets than they were on being good shots.
