I don't blame Topher for the crap in SPM3 I blame the director/writers. :(

Venom needs to be scary and a bulky monster!!!

yeah venom was a wuss in spiderman 3. there was too much going on to ever have a chance to be a good movie.

Topher Grace was pretty good in That 70s' Show he was obviously a bad choice for Venom but thats not his fault.

Yes and no. While Eddie Brock was always drawn a bit thicker (partly due to McFarlane's style in those days) he wasn't a huge bodybuilder when he first obtained the symbiote. It was through the symbiote that he began to train and lift weights. One of my favorite panels was during a Bagley run where Venom is lifting two huge weights (I think they were cars or something along those lines) crudely attached with what looked like a street light and Brock couldn't do it. He tries a few times and then suddenly the symbiote poured over his torso and he lifted it, then the complete transformation occurred and he tossed them to a building or something. Really showed how much more strength Venom actually has then even the strongest man.

Of course, there are rumors that Eddie Brock in Spider-Man 3 would actually turn out to be Eddie Brock Jr and that the father would have a vendetta against Spider-Man for the death of his son and that reminants of the suit are what find him. There are other rumors that the Venom movie would pick up with Mac Gargan. But all rumors seem to point to the Venom movie really being about the character learning about the suit and powers as the basis.

It should be interesting once the writing team nails down a script what direction they go with especially because they seem more aware of the public perception of Venom than the scribes of Spider-Man 3

While happy to take the job, Reese added that he is terrified, reasoning "It's source material that everybody knows and everybody's familiar with and everybody loves. There's a burden on you to meet the expectations of people. A lot of people are curious about Venom."

Still, Reese furthermore revealed that he and Wernick had done some research for it. "We read [Venom] growing up, but we were not experts," he explained. "We certainly know the mythology of Venom, but went back and learned more when it became clear that we could actually get this job."

FINALLY! Someone who knows what they're talking about. All these kids that see huge Venom just assume that's how he always looked.

It's even addressed in the 90's cartoon that Eddie started weight lifting. (He was pissed at Peter, and took his frustration out on the weights)

It should also be noted that towards the end Brock had cancer so the final few appearances of the Brock Venom he was thinner and leaner than even when he began. Also the "Anti-Venom" which is the newest incarnation of Brock with a Symbiotesque bond is also very thin and lean due to the character's stature. Venom's strength came solely through influence of the suit and is one of the reasons why Brock was so afraid over the years to lose it because he didn't want to revert back to "the skinny little wimp" before. Topher would have been fine as Brock in the beginning but would have to massively put on weight for the Venom film if he is kept to keep continuity.
