Wow. Kudos to Kasdan for standing up to Lucas. I can understand why Lucas didn't want to have anyone else contribute to the prequels since he seemed to meet a lot of opposition.
I can see both sides of having characters killed. Killing someone off will definitely bring a lot of impact to the story, and will ultimately make it more poignant. It wo uld also help a story transcend from just "a kid's movie" to something timeless. However, there are probably ways to craft a story with the same kind of gravitas but without killing anyone off. It's certainly more difficult, but I think it's possible.
Regardless, it shows Lucas had incredibly stupid ideas all the way back in 1983.
