I have to agree with you about the Klingons...well it's pretty much all I've posted about in here. They changed everything about them and it's needless. Why not change the Vulcans too while they were at it? I've just found it impossible to get used to and it has undermined the whole series for me.

I have no idea why they have changed the Klingons this much maybe its to attract more viewers making them look more aggressive but the show itself is very enjoyable.

Nice review! As I've said previously, I'm happy to overlook the Klingons' appearance as a reimagining.

What DOES bother me though (as also previously mentioned)...

The spore drive technology seems way too advanced for that period in the Prime Timeline. I can see one of two things needing to happen:

• Starfleet decides the technology is too dangerous and buries all trace of it forever.
• The producers admit that, yes, this really is a different timeline (or even the Mirror Universe!)

If it *does* turn out to be a different timeline, that would also explain no mention of Spock ever having a half-sister.

This show feels like it's written by people who don't know anything more than seeing a couple Saturday Night Live parodies and maybe binge watching a few episodes to get hired as a writer.

In theory Kirk is on the Farragut and Spock is on the Enterprise right now. Both Constitution class ships are built and have been in service for some time. Neither have spore drives nor will they ever.

I don't care what the producers say. This is not the prime universe.

Meh. I know it's hard to keep spoilers under wraps with as rabid a fan base as Trekkies, but...

They really bungled the Voq/Tyler connection and made it way to easy to figure out. Everyone saw that coming, and they were gearing up for that reveal for a while. AND Now Lorca's from the Mirror Universe, something a lot of fans have been guessing at ever since that episode where he acted funny after sleeping with the Admiral. Point is, they're doing a pretty bad job at making everyone shocked, despite continually trying to do so. Giving subtle hints only works when they're SUBTLE enough to miss on your first viewing.

They DID shock me when Culber was killed. But that's because there was no hinting at it, it just HAPPENED. If they want to shock you, pull out more stuff like that. Don't bluntly hint at anything, fans will figure it out.

Just saying that when you already know what's coming, or at least expect it, before you see it the first time, it kindof loses something.

And don't say "avoid spoilers." They made both their big twists pretty clear to even the casual fan.

Overall, though, I'm not hating it. I mostly like the main characters and feel invested in them. But it still doesn't really feel like Star Trek to me. The first two Kelvin movies didn't, either, but after Beyond I thought we were finally getting back to the Trek I loved, just updated for a modern audience. Discovery feels like they threw out the old Trek to make it just like other popular shows nowadays.

I will say I am disappointed that

Lorca being from the Mirror Universe ended up being true. I know it's been pretty much guaranteed by now (again, too clear on those 'subtle' hints),
but I was hoping there was a bigger twist, like he had captured his mirror self and used the spore drive to take them into the mirror universe for war intel or something. I was actually really getting to like his character, and the twist means he won't be Captain anymore. Maybe there's a prime universe Lorca around somewhere, but odds are this guy killed him off to take his place.

Also, one last criticism:

The whole set up that they spent so long on was that this show - or at least, the first season - was supposed to be about a great war. It was a pretty good setup, seeing it from both points of view. But we gradually lost the POV of the Kingons, and then basically finished the whole war arc really quickly and put a bow on it. Seems like a waste of a lot of energy to set it up just to knock it down quickly. If anything, it reminds me of the Enterprise Xindi Arc. Remember that?
We were promised this season-long arc that was going to be so dark and different and was set up so well. And then half of it was more of the same.
