Anno used this kind of ending for many episodes of Eva.
So it actually feels like there should be a sequel...

If you're going that big with a puppet might as well just use an actor since the puppet is human size, less hydraulics.

Toho used puppets that large for a number of shots in the Heisei era, especially Biollanted and Ghidorah '91. They used them mainly for close up shots because not having an actor in suit allowed more electronics and such allowing more performance than you can get from an actor worn suit.
