Oh, and Hank Pym doesn't get as much guff because he wasn't an international arms dealer. Pym is a pacifist, something Stark is not. Cap doesn't trust Stark, for good reason: Stark doesn't trust anyone (except Pepper), that's why he events artificial people, like Jarvis (and then Ultron and Vision). There was so much to explore there that wasn't.

I read that Whedon's original cut of AoU was 3 1/2 hrs long but Feigi made him cut it down to 2 hrs 20 min. Whedon's directors cut will be on the dvd, restoring much of that footage and adding a different ending.

Well of course he had to cut it down. They couldn't release a 3 1/2 hour Marvel movie. Lord of the rings is one thing because it's geared more towards adults. These are by and large family movies and kids can't fit through three and a half hours.

As for your point about Hank versus Tony, well sure you are right that Hank is a pacifist and Tony is not but again it again sounds like you are wishing that this movie rehashed old things. You are ignoring where avengers one left off with Cap and Tony coming to an understanding. And this whole movie started the way it did specifically to show that they do have an understanding between them. Tony is not an international arms dealer anymore and to treat him like he is the same character from Iron Man 1 would be to render every film leading up to this useless.

Like I said the transgression wasn't making Ultron it was hiding it from the team and not trusting them in that way. Stark's former life as an arms dealer is and should be irrelevant at this point unless you are asking that the character devolve, or that the moral be that people can't and don't change.

Again you guys are assuming Stark deserves punishment for his transgressions. I don't recall Hank Pym ever getting punished for creating Ultron. In fact, every comic I've read about it (which admittedly is not all I'm sure), the rest of the Avengers are constantly reassuring Pym that it wasn't his fault because he had good intentions, as did Stark. And his continued hubris as the mad scientist leads to the creation of Vision, who I think will ultimately have more of an impact in a positive way than Ultron did in a negative way. Progress has roadblocks and mistakes happen, so I think the point is more that it is ultimately the right thing to do to pursue your talents and try to make the world a better place as best you know how.

As for the Frankenstein comparisons, that last bit about making the world a better place is key. Dr. Frankenstein really only had his own selfish desire to prove he could do the impossible at heart, not the betterment of the world. Tony Stark is vain, but we already spent 4 films having Stark evolve from a vain jerk who only cared about himself to a vain jerk who has good intentions. We don't need that constantly reharshed we are supposed to now accept his character as having developed to the point of truly caring about his friends and the world, which is why his major transgression was not his pursuit of creating AI, but rather his having hidden his work from his team.

I do wholeheartedly agree though that the father/son aspect was underplayed. To me it's a key component to making Ultron interesting and I wish the movie had focused on it more as it helps to round out Ultron as a somewhat empathetic character. Though in another way, Ultron was too human and anthropomorphized to the point that we didn't really get the whole terminator like theme of the dangers of AI.

Now, while I don't personally care if MCU is being discussed in this thread, I do think the discussion should go to the movie thread just for the sake of livening up the debate, since over there it's pretty ubitiquous praise and while I don't agree with many of the points being made here in the negative, they are mostly good points and I'd like to see them fleshed out more fully in a broader discussion.

Hank Pym was curious about the possibility of higher/artificial intelligence because he's a scientist and experimented. Hank Pym lives with that regret and guilt every day. He puts himself in his own personal hell because of that. Another reason why Pym has been blamed many times is because he used his own, unstable, brain waves as the test pattern. There's been multiple times where all he's worried about is that he'll always be remembered as the person who unleashed hell on Earth. (Pym has serious identity issues.)

Tony Stark has had good intentions since he became Iron Man. That was his purpose. Hell, it is quite possibly one of the most well written comic book movies I've seen. "You stood by my side all these years while I reaped the benefits of destruction. Now that I'm trying to protect the people I've put in harm's way, you're going to walk out?" (Ironically that quote fits in very well and could have been used amazingly well within the context of the film.) Tony Stark was unbelievably selfish in Age of Ultron. Pym didn't try to create a suit of armor for the world so he could go home like Tony Stark did in Age of Ultron. (Pym has always wanted to be a hero.) "We don't have time for a city hall debate." was Stark's response to Banner's questioning of using Loki's Sceptor without the permission of the Avengers. Even though his intentions were true and attempted to pursue his own talents, it's downright selfish.

The creation of Vision, another selfish act by Stark, would not have been approved by the team if Thor didn't allow it due to his vision and the Mind Stone. Banner began to express more moral fiber than Stark did at that point because he understood that the last experiment ended up being a murderous artificial intelligence. While The Vision is indeed a positive to come out of a negative, it was never guaranteed to not be similar to Ultron and Stark accepted that risk.

All-in-all, it's difficult to argue that we're supposed to accept a character caring about his friends when he doesn't value their opinion because he had his own personal endgame to accomplish.

I did a too-long post a month or so ago and detailed those exact thoughts. In fact, I even contrasted Frieza and Loki. Frieza is as one-dimensional as they come. But as you said, he is deliciously evil and a constant exponential threat to everyone. The only one-up that Ultron had over the team was his 4G connection.

Whedon could have done so much with Ultron to make him powerful and have us, the viewers, question how the Avengers are going to get through this. His characterization could have been a mixture of Frieza, Android 17, and Perfect Cell. Ultron could have used Frieza's ruthlessness, Android 17's rebelliousness, and Perfect Cell's strive for perfection.

Edited: I've realized this awhile ago but Goku's face is too small, isn't it? For Super Saiyan 3 Goku. I can't tell if it's because he's missing eyebrows but his face always seemed bigger.

I was just thinking that Normal Goku is getting a "re-issue" in the sense if you buy Ultimate Gohan and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Goku. I guess anybody who was never able to get Normal Goku at a decent price will now be able to do so in several months.

I see you guys' posts a lot and we're all big fans of the same thing here. It's easy to see why some would be curious how such an event film fared among this "demographic", aka dbzfans.

Now I agree, cause this isn't the thread for it, but from what I get as well as expected on a site originally for people who buy 200+$ collectibles a piece for things like this, the native topic is flooded with drooling marvel fanboys who are satisfied with a film if they see Hulk punch enough and stark quip enough. I have not an ounce of desire to take a swim in that cream pool and get blasted in the face by people who don't even get what a term like 'one dimensional character' actually means. (I've been in the moviethreads before and I got more ******** out of it than anything else, notwithstanding there is serious discussion there too.)

Age of Ultron was 90% inconsequential fanservice, that is my main issue with it, but it's the main POSITIVE for a lot of people. Why? Because at the end of the day a lot of people don't (necessarily) want from a movie what I want. I don't needto go there to know that it eventually is gonna boil down to that.

Now I see Goku smirking everywhere so up yours if you think that's not like the character. (This is meant in good spirit.)

@Fat lol ty, ftr I would back you up on multiple arguments you made, but it's clear we agree already anyway. I've explained to people why I don't feel like going to the AoU thread. I also feel I've made my arguments clear and sound but anyone who wants me to address their criticism of it, DM me. Overall speaking,

AoU is too much of a kids film to me and even as a kids film I have issues with it. Stark messes with stuff he doesn't understand and it has nearly global extinction as a result, then he freakin does it again. What the bleeding ****!? That Thor has a magic vision and makes the call I can get, he had a lead to go on (blows my mind that I'm defending Thor's decision making), but Stark just says 'it's what we scientists do', **** that. When the scientists who made the nuke saw what they had created they said 'now I am shiva, the god of death', Stark says 'hm, let's try again' gtfo irresponsible egomaniac. Before vision rises cap and stark where literally fighting and Cap (and Wanda) were TOTALLY in the RIGHT. Then vision is born, who is awesome (I will say that, he had the best dialogue in the film) and suddenly all is forgotten. That's not how ethics work, that's not heroic, that's accidentally not ****ing up. In an army any soldier for the calls stark makes would be court marshalled (I hope) no matter how well the consequences happened to play out. And that sure as **** shouldn't be something Cap just 'lets slides' either, it's highly against character, and it's ridiculous. Humor for comfort my ass, these characters don't make jokes, through their behavior they become jokes. Stark should've blatantly been demoted, but because he conveniently leaves before he can be assessed all we get is imma miss you tony. Ugh, just UGH! And I liked Avengers, and I liked how Whedon used IM in the first film, but that ****er doesn't learn ****. Not since IM1, not at the end of Avengers 2. Marvel doesn't have the balls to commit actual negative consequences to the behavior of their protagonists, that makes it utterly boring as well as morally bankrupt to me. But hey *cue music*
