Even though I am not getting a XBox One at launch, this is rather disappointing news for a "next gen" system:

Crytek's Xbox One launch title Ryse: Son of Rome runs natively at 900p as opposed to in full 1080p, Microsoft has confirmed.

Microsoft had previously said that Ryse ran in native 1080p, but executive Aaron Greenberg took to Twitter to clarify the situation: Ryse runs at native 900p, but the Xbox One will upscale it to 1080p.

So yes, Ryse runs at 30fps at a resolution of 1600×900, 44% fewer pixels than 1080p – which any PC gamer will tell you is just not at all impressive, and not the sort of things we’d expect of “next gen.” Still, whatever the resolution, Ryse does look pretty incredible close up, though the lack of 1080p native resolution could indeed be indicative of a weaker console.

Leave it to Microsoft to drag down the next generation with an underpowered console again...but don't worry, cloud power will save you! :lol

I'm not gonna lie...I was never really interested in this game, and have AC4 and BF4 POed, but after these last trailers my feelings have changed and was toying around with the idea of moving my BF PO over to this, but I want something with multiplayer.

Perhaps I'll pick this up after xmas.

I've become really interested in this game but I've got COD & BF pre-ordered to keep me occupied for quite some time but I will buy this just not straight away

From Game Informer website yesterday:

Ryse: Son Of Rome Is As Fun As Dialing Phone Numbers

I've never wanted to leave a demo as badly as the one for this tedious, uninspired Xbox One launch title.

If you’ve ever watched Lost, you’re familiar with the character of Desmond Hume. The former monk was stranded on the series’ mysterious island, and was tasked with repeatedly pressing the same series of buttons on a keyboard for weeks at a time. Why he had to do that is still pretty confusing to me (as is the rest of the series), but I was reminded of Desmond’s task for the duration of my time with the demo for Ryse: Son of Rome. I spent two hours with the Xbox One title, but it felt like I was entering random numbers into a computer rather than actually playing a video game.

It’s clear what Microsoft and developer Crytek are shooting for here. At launch, they want a big budget, epic action game that clearly demonstrates next-gen visuals. Ryse is undeniably pretty, but that’s about all it had going for it in this demo. After a painfully generic story intro, the game began teaching me similarly uninspired combat mechanics. While it tries to sound like an in-depth action game with familiar elements like perfectly-timed blocks and focus meters, the actual experience is anything but deep.

I’m hoping that later levels introduce some more difficult enemies, as the dozens of encounters I had consisted of all the complexity of dialing phone numbers. Almost every fight started with me hitting the attack button a couple of times, then pushing the enemy in an effort to stop him from breaking my combo. Then, I’d continue attacking until he was weak enough for the execution sequence. Once this occurs, the game slows down and the enemy flashes various colors. You press the face button of the appropriate color, and your protagonist Marius dismembers or murders the foe in dramatic fashion.

It’s so basic and predictable, I began testing to see if I could get past most combat situations with one hand. With my left hand completely off the controller, I was able to slice and dice through tons of enemies simply by inputting the same sequence ad nauseum. On a couple of occasions, the game would shift to sequences that involved me defending an area with crossbow stations or ordering my men to block arrows with their shields. These were somehow even less exciting than the tedious swordplay.

When I sat down at the Ryse: Son of Rome station, I was a fairly blank slate when it came to knowledge of the title. I knew it was developed by the talented team at Crytek, and I knew it was gorgeous based on the videos I had seen at conventions, so I was prepared to be impressed. What I didn’t expect was a desire to get up and leave the demo about ten minutes in. I stuck it out in hopes that it would prove itself a deeper experience over time, but its only success was ensuring my wallet will be $60 heavier when the Xbox One launches.

OUCH!!!

Theres elements of Ryse that seem fun, but it also looks like a overly simple button masher with tons of quick time events. It looks like it would get old pretty fast. Technically it looks beautiful, but its Crytek. Thats what they do.

When I get an X1 this will be a game I get. It just looks like some simple button mashing fun.

This is an amazing game.

Quite possibly the best game I played in the last year (Tomb Raider is a close 2nd).

Its fresh story and setting are great, with fantastic acting by the voice actors and spectacular graphics.

The combat is solid, it's very responsive. I started playing Assassin's Creed IV after playing Ryse and I felt the combat in AC was broken, it was not as smooth, solid feeling, and responsive as Ryse's combat system.

I enjoyed every moment of the campaign, it never got boring and there wasn't a dull moment.

The multiplayer is a big surprise, it's fun to do the coliseum co-op missions, quite enjoyable and you leave wanting to play it some more.

I don't understand the reviews on the game. They really don't make sense to me after spending many hours playing this game. It seems as if all the reviewers gathered in a room and agreed to give the game an average score just because. I think the game ranks quite higher than above average.

Yes, this games combat is repetitive but it's a gorgeous game to play and the story is great. It definitely should of scored better than it did.

I think im going to get this. I love Spartacus/300/rome... so this is right up my street. I think what you need to consider is weapon wise, they only really used a shield and sword so there is only so much you can do. My only gripe from what iv heard is you seem to battle the same barbarian . This really could turn into a great series of games in the future.
