Great episode and finale for the season.
I have to say that the opening sequence was the best use of music and storytelling in a GOT episode since the "Reynes of Castamere" was used during the Red Wedding in the "Rains of Castamere" episode back in season 3 (obviously, the difference being that the "Reynes of Castamere" was actually being played by the band during the Red Wedding and that the music in last night's episode, "The Winds of Winter", was used to set the tone). Fantastic. I was hooked from the go by the music, and while most of us here had already deduced how things were going to unfold, the way that scene was shot was
still riveting and suspenseful.
The director of this episode is the same guy who directed "Battle of the Bastards" and "Hardhome", he needs to become the one and only Director for the show.
The man has an incredible batting average.
I'm inclined to agree, but on the flip side, I don't want him spread too thin directing all the episodes.
Amazing episode. I felt bad about Tommen. We knew he had to go out, but like that? Definitely did a good job setting up next season.
We knew Tommen was going to die, and I thought that he might be collateral damage in the Sept, but Cersei was astute enough to prevent him from leaving the Red Keep...but in her arrogance and vengeance, she didn't think how Tommen himself would take losing his bride.
given the title, I thought we'd see some some WW for the finale.
Yeah, I honestly thought that the season would end with the White Walkers breaching the wall (which leads me to a point I'll bring up later in this long @$$ post...)
It's kinda weird that Cersei just murdered hundreds of people and now she's the queen and everyone's like "That's cool". I wonder if they just don't know it was her, and assumed it was an unfortunate accident.
I'm sure Jamie knows what's up, and his arc next season will be if he brings her to justice or not. I assume he can't really, but he will betray her, or relive his Kingslayer moment and become a Queenslayer as well. I mean, that's Jamie's whole arc, everything he's done has been for Cersei, but once he realizes she's an awful person, and she doesn't care for him, the same way he cares for her. He wants to be good, she doesn't. Ultimately, he will kill her. That's just the way drama works.
She pretty much eliminated all her enemies in one fell swoop. The Sparrows and Faith Militant stood for the common people. The Tyrells are gone (with the exception of the Queen of Thorns). No major players to contest her ascension.
I think it will be very poetic if
Jaime does have a hand in Cersei's death, and maybe dies with her. She made a point of saying some seasons ago that they "Came into the world together"...it would be poetic indeed if they left the world together.
I was a bit surprised Margaery just went out like that. I wondered how her own plan was going to unfold.
What was the mountain doing to the sparrow puppet? The cuts and slices thing?
Yes, it sucks that it ended and we didn't get to see Margaery's long game.
Oh well.
As for the Mountain, my wife asked the same thing. Use your imagination and think of the worst...this was the guy who in his previous "human" incarnation killed Elia Martell and Rhaegar Targaryen's infant children and raped Elia Martell before killing her...
Man, Varys got from Dorne to Danny's Mereen fleet awfully fast!
Yes, that and Arya showing up at the Twins so fast were the "missteps" of the episodes...but that's only nitpicking what was a fantastic episode overall. I'll take offscreen sea travel over offscreen deaths any day of the week...and twice on Sunday's when GOT comes on.
Now to cancel HBO until GOT returns next spring...although both
The Night Of and
Westworld are tempting me to keep HBO a little longer...
