The only anime I enjoy are the giant robot stuff, Mazinger, Raideen etc or the Gatchaman series, mostly for nostalgia reasons.

Obviously Godzilla.

The other stuff no thanks.

No it wasn't. Guillermo Del Toro had never seen Eva prior to filming this movie. He said he has all of he dvd's but he chose not to watch it because he didn't want to be influenced.

I see Mazinger/Raideen in this movie with the pilot in the cockpit attached to the mech.

Plus Raideen's long sword.

But can you really have a giant robot movie and not reference back to those classics.

If anything, the classic giant robots deserve their own live action movie.
