Another factor is that so many Chinese factories have gone out of business. The remaining ones are more likely to want to deal with major players, which can make it more difficult to even find places willing to make your stuff, or results in you being put at the end of a long waiting list. It's probably a combination of all of these.

Its only 7" tall. If it were 12", then I'd understand.

Lots of removable parts would raise the price as well. It's not a single cast piece.

Just irritating that it was once much cheaper. Too bad they made those clone commander busts so limited. They could have made a lot more money on them and could have left themselves in a better position financially to offer this (or anything else this year). I guess watching collectors jump through scalpers hoops was more important.

Just did some digging and found ot that Toy Ark got it very wrong. Hot Toys were in no way involved apparently!

Oh well!

I can't believe this hasn't been reported here... or if it has I can't find it!
Anyway, I saw the model show up at the weekend on a couple of sites!

I saw this a little while ago. Got ready to order, than realized how small a 1/6 droid would be...That is tiny for $120

I kind of just took it that it would... the BBTS pics don't show the stand. I have to admit that would be important to me as well, but I have so many R2 models in different scales, it wouldn't break the deal.

I'm probably passing. I doubt he's articulated and I'm not even sure he's removable from the base. Plus, what 1:6 is it? Could be Hasbro's 1:6 or Medi's 1:6. It'd be a shame to dump $200+ on him (after shipping and tax) and get a box full of disappointment.

It'd be a shame to dump $200+ on him (after shipping and tax) and get a box full of disappointment.

BBTS has it for $129 (that's the adjusted price) and there are places that have it for cheaper. You'd have to really try to find the worst possible deal to get it anywhere near $200+.

As for the scale, Gentle Giant is generally pretty good at being actual 1/6 scale, but I will say that their C-3PO statue is definitely on the petite side. I'm interested to know how they will display together (although given the way that GG does their bases, you won't be able to get them right next to each other in any case).

Expect another price update from BBTS who, according to their website, aren't getting theirs until June of '10. Posted today:

Hot Toys has revealed a new Star Wars statue. The new R2-D2 will be released via Gentle Giant. The statue, sized at 1/6 scale, is set to release this month for a price of about $198.

I have no idea where they got their info from. Everything else I've seen has it coming out next year for an MSRP of $159.
