Same here Mike... I know I've seen shots of Stoltz in the past. Why is this suddenly topical?
Before in the last 25 years they have never released the video footage of Stoltz as Marty to the public, only still shots.

Snapshot from the alternate universe :D.

eric stoltz is indeed a good actor, but the role of marty mcfly required a lighter touch and a sense of playfulness that stoltz would've had to ACT out. mjf had those qualities naturally, and in abundance. so it would've been too much work and too forced to get the same thing out of stoltz, who is generally more introspective and intense by nature. zemeckis and spielberg made the right choice, zero doubt on that.

but i'd really love to see more of stoltz in whatever scenes they shot. it would make a fantastic case-study in how an actor makes a world of difference. same script, same director, different star can/does change everything...

Based on just a couple scenes I can tell Marty would have been much more serious and stoic, which would have lead to a less humerous movie (even with the same dialogue) and thus the movie would have struggled to find greatness.

Or more likely, not found it at all :lecture

Agree!

And I don't think BTTF would have FLOPPED, necessarily. But it certainly wouldn't be the 80s cultural icon it is now. I can see the more "straight man" approach to Marty working, especially with Doc Brown and George bouncing all the wackiness off of him.

Even MJF was a little bit of a risky casting choice coming off of Family Ties. MJF was Alex P. Keaton through and through before BTTF. I remember sitting in the theater in 1985 being a little skeptical of his performance in the beginning, "acting" like a "cool guy" with his shades and guitar. But by the end of the movie I was completely won over. It's a testament to MJF's talents that he was able to create two extremely different, but charming, iconic characters.

The movie works better with the lighter tone MJF brought to it. I think Stoltz would have blown the guitar solo scene, for example, and numerous other scenes which required quick comic timing and physical comedy.

What's interesting to me is, not only did they change actors (MJF for Stoltz) but they also changed ALL of Marty McFly's attire.

Stoltz is STILL in many scenes. Lots of the driving scenes and "far away" shots of McFly are actually him. The real question is does he get any royalties?

Not just that but MJF had "everyman" qualities about him. Even his clothes. Whereas Stoltz looked like he just stepped out of some teenybopper fashion magazine.
