Just saw this tonight. Great movie. Very original. Felt like a mix between Blood Diamond and Half-life. Best movie of the year. Hopefully they'll come out with an extended edition.
Star Trek, Terminator 4, TransFormers, GI Joe, District 9.
Star Trek was my top for the summer so far, so if you say D9 is better, then I'm cautiously stoked.
i've already read an interview with Blomcamp stating there will be an extended version on dvd.Just saw this tonight. Great movie. Very original. Felt like a mix between Blood Diamond and Half-life. Best movie of the year. Hopefully they'll come out with an extended edition.
Spoiler:I wish there had been more of an uprising of the Aliens though. I was hoping the Aliens would raid the gangsters' hangout, take back the weapons and blast their way...somewhere. Didn't like the ending. It was the most realistic way for it to end, but having 1 Alien and his son escape to the mother ship and fly home all by themselves while the star finishes evolving and the Aliens are evicted after all, kinda left me with a 'why did I bother watching this' feeling. There was no pay off unless there is a sequel in 'three years'. I felt the same way about Saving Private Ryan. All these other soldiers died to save one guy, who didn't want to leave the war, which caused even more to die waiting on his ass, and then all he does with his life is get old. MEH.
(mega spoiler alert. If you haven't seen it, don't read this)

Spoiler:He WILL return, so long as this film does well. Jackson and Blomkamp have both said that they would like this to be a continuing collaboration. And I gotta say, the little boy ROCKED!
I loved it for its original take on Alien Nation (sort of). This thing had great character development, especially the Aliens. This is the first time I've seen a movie full of CG, and not once did the CG take me out of the movie.
The Alien technology and weapons were awesome. The exosuit was very cool. But... (mega spoile alert. If you haven't seen it, don't read this)

Spoiler:well, it was the best way to set it up for a sequel.
and if the ending had a big "pay off"and wrapped everything up neatly, it would've ruined everything that was intended to be portrayed.
also, i'm still not going to assume that Christopher had any intention of coming back and helping anybody. part of what made the movie so realistic was its cynicism. everyone was out to save their own asses and there weren't any real "good guys". for all we know, he could've just told Wikus that he was coming back so he'd have to help him leave.
damn. i have to go see this again.
Blomkamp's Halo 3 ads were pretty epic. i wish the games were that entertaining.Dammit, Neil Blomkamp and Peter Jackson have to do the Halo movie. After seeing District 9, it just fits. Like a glove.
As for the movie itself, I liked it, but I thought it kind of faltered halfway through and turned into a plain action flick.
Cool designs for the aliens and technology though. I'd buy collectibles based on the film if available.
