Creating a rock dio

I don't know how big you want yours, but I created some rocks using modeltrain rock molds. Like from the one below. Super easy to make, all you need to do is add water to the plaster and pore it in the mold. Once it dries, peel it out and paint it.

I was thinking of doing the same thing except I was wanting to do a dio with trees so I thought of finding branches that are thick enough and can look as a tree, but does anyone know if this is a bad idea? I though maybe termites or bugs might start crawling on this thing and end up harming the figures. I thought about even sealing it with gloss or something to prevent bugs infestation. Had anyone used real wood before on their dio?
 
Cheers guys for the help. I wanted to something like this in the corner of a large rectangle base with the corners like like this photo but the rock needs to be semi large and flatter.
