this reminds me of the mascot from Community (when they were trying to not offend anyone)

latest

It didn't offend YOU? :lol

Everything has extremes. Political parties, nationalities, religions, social movements, interest groups, philosophies, etc. Were I to lump you in with the most radical of the groups with which you identify, you wouldn't take too kindly to that.

If everyone believed as you do, there would be no debate. No argument. No rhetoric. We would all be attacking each other based on the stereotypical images of the groups with which we align ourselves, not the points we make. Not the issues. At best, we would stagnate as a society. At worst, we'd be dead.

That's a strawman.

Radicals carry the argument because they're the most logically consistent. In the long run, they win. While the moderates hem and haw over what the true implications of their ideas are, the radicals charge full steam ahead. Compartmentalization will always lose in the face of certainty.

Speaking as a radical, feel free to lump me in with the most logically consistent advocates of my views.

I wouldn't say the radicals win, at least not directly. The original goal (before they push it to the extreme) may be achieved, but not their particular vision of it. The dial may be moved enough to effect change, but when the dust falls the situation will have settled somewhere closer to middle.

It is possible to confront an issue and maintain civility. That would be the socially conscious thing to do and that's all I'm advocating for -- having the discussion and hearing things out. I'm not looking for a violent, ideology-fueled revolution and neither are many people out there. An honest, two-way dialogue is hard enough to come by.

Don't equate radicalism with violence. Although most ideologies become violent in the extreme, it's only because they're fundamentally irrational and incapable of being dealt with intellectually in the final analysis. A rational ideology is a rare bird.

BLM, OWS, and the rest of the modern progressive causes are moved by the radicals on all fronts. They were initiated by them. They'll be carried beyond the current pale by them. Once the arguments fail (socialism is a good historical example) the only alternative will be violent demonstration (the peaceful demonstrations to date are a good example of how easily they will become that). I'm sure there were peaceful Bolsheviks. They didn't last.

You can plead civility until you're blue in the face. This equal representation nonsense will not end well. It's premised on racism and that is where it will end. Let me know the last time racially driven cultural conflict was amicably resolved in this country.

The idea is to show readers that a hero can be anyone from anywhere

....for a little while.

You know fine well, from their very inception, that these 'characters' are only temporary stand in's aimed at attracting a short-term publicity (and hopefully sales) boost. It's all well and good comic book companies courting attention by playing the diversity card, but it's ultimately self-defeating when they don't have the balls to leave it on the table.

They'll make a big song and dance about bravely replacing one of their top tier names with someone of the opposite sex or of a different skin colour, but what sort of message is it actually sending out when, six months to a year later, they start trumpeting the 'triumphant' return of 'the one, true' original and relegate their much hyped replacement to a mere footnote in said character's history or a rapidly receding supporting role?

It's been pretty entertaining to watch DC suddenly overtake Marvel in sales by ditching the manufactroversy business model and instead focus on just telling good stories again, while Civil War II and Marvel Now 2: Tumblr Boogaloo have floundered.

That's what worries me. People on both sides are dying because a conversation can no longer even start without getting shut down. You can't support one cause without being assumed to hate all the others. But what's the alternative? Not talking about it and hoping it'll go away?

There definitely is a lack of creativity in the MARVEL comic world these days. Over the constant start from #1 over and over again.
