Re: Blitzway 1/6 Scale Hannibal Lecter

Loving this two figure set. Lost some intensity a long the way, however paint app is actually good, the details are definitely there if you’re not warm light cell phone pic‘ing it. Lol. Hands down, it’s Anthony Hopkins. Took some cell phone pics under the ****** warm light of my ceiling fan too, just like some folks on the internet like to do as well. [emoji1787] [emoji91]

Proper lighting, like Tyler makes all the difference.

Great shots.

Looks like the typical BW drop off to me? Dunno , I think it looks pretty good.

Still, its a but overpriced.

So one...if not the main selling point of the straight jacket Hannibal is the iconic mask, and they got it wrong? :lol How does that happen? It even has a fourth spoke, instead of 3.

Changing the design of the mask from correct to incorrect should be grounds for a refund if desired by customers. That is the definition of bait and switch.

I hope they don't pull anything like this with the Ecto 1. Glad I didn't pre-order for now.

Re: Blitzway 1/6 Scale Hannibal Lecter

This is the look they were going for. Blank stares will often come off as cross eyed, however the eyes are straight, but the eye sockets themselves are closer to the brim of the nose than the real pics of Hopkins to the left.

The mask is tricky. I couldn't find any shots that really show the nostril section. There are lots of pictures of the new film mask which has the two holes and slit but I'm not totally convinced its a real slit in the first film mask. And they are not the same mask. I was going to try and reach out to the maker of the original who makes NHL masks but I never did. That project took too long as it was. The Blitzway proto mask has the holes and the indication of the slit.

I just found out why it changed. Ed Cubberly the designer and maker of the original mask owns the copyright to the design. Ill bet Blitzway found that out after the released the figure promo shots.

This is simply one of the biggest head scratchers I’ve come across in this hobby yet. I actually can’t come up with a logical rationale on how something like this could happen.
.

Actually shouldn’t be too much of a head scratcher. Probably about a 98% chance it was a production/quality issue, and timing/finances most likely influenced their decision. HT has botched numerous accessories in their time. BTTF II Marty’s hat most recently comes to mind. Lol.

THE STORY BEHIND THE MASK
If you recall Silence of the Lambs, Dr Lecter was interviewed by a phsychiatrist while he was jailed. He had a wire cage covering his face that sat right up against his nose as the doctor spoke to him. That was in fact an upside down goalie mask cage purchased in Gerry Cosby's Sporting Goods in Manhatten, NY. The buyers were designers from the prop department at Strong Heart Productions, a subsidiary of Orion Pictures. They told the manager they needed a mask made for a movie they were producing. The manager pulled out a business card and said, "Here, call this guy". That business card belonged to yours truly and the rest as they say "is history". So in the fall of 1989, I got a call from costume designer Coleen Atwood. At the time, I had no idea who Anthony Hopkins was or what I was getting into. She told me they were making a movie and needed a mask made. I said, tell me about the scene. She replied, "Well, he's a psychizophrenic who goes around biting people" I said, "So, you want me to make you a muzzle? ". Coleen asked that I put on my thinking cap and get back to them. Having years of experience making old time fiberglass goalie masks that fit exactly to the face, this was a no brainer. I dug up some photos of full fiberglass masks that I made then drew an outline where I planned on cutting the mask. So in a matter of about 5 minutes, the concept was born and sketches of the Hannibal Lechter mask were in the mail. Basically the Lechter mask is nothing more than the lower half of an old time goalie mask. Then I added bars over the mouth to make it look mean. I suggested to the props department to leave the fiberglass in it's raw color of greenish- brown to make it look like it was made in the jail housing Hannibal "the Cannibal". The producers loved the idea ! I guess I was in the right place at the right time.

Later, in 1991, "The Silence of the Lambs" starring Anthony Hopkins and Jody Foster was released. It went on to win 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture. I was ecstatic to see my first and only Hollywood mask become an iconic piece of movie history. It sent chills down the spine of many viewers.

The below picture is from a Don Post Halloween mask and not the original. But you can see the slit.

Ah, it’s like the Evil Dead Necronomicon prop or the Avengers briefcase ownership issue, and I’m sure several others. Makes sense. Thanks. :duff

Leave it to the man himself to solve that mystery. Disappointing but we can't fault Blitzway for this at all as it was a rights issue. They get a big pass now in my book and I have to say that alone makes me reconsider their lack of attention to detail and may main gripes now solely lie with a high drop off in production quality. Good info to have as I'm typing up my review now!

Seems to me that information should have been updated on the for sale pages and relayed to customers who pre-ordered. It's a pretty big change really.
