If we have to wait much longer they won't have to, everyone who wants one will do this. Arnie Kim has obviously seen the customs that are coming out.
When customisers who get together can produce this level of figure themselves, who needs a licensed mass produced figure?
Said it before I'm bored with the wait now for hot toys (even though I'll probrably get one). I'm looking forward to Lex next, gonna be fun upgrading/repainting that.

I absolutely agree with you Rebelpig. Ever since I put together my custom with mattel and Fenix' head, my anticipation for HT's reveal has gone down. After seeing the Indiana Jones sculpt, it went down some more. I've sculpted Reeve's face more times than I can count and it is not an easy face to do. Even Erick Sosa (Fenix head sculptor) and BobbyC has commented so and have done multiple revisions on their versions.

i like these mattel figs the way they are though I've really loved seeing the customs. to me it takes me back to what 12" figures looked like while ago when I was younger. I guess there's a bit of nostalgia for me but i think these are some great figures modded and unmodded

Now that I've made this, I just don't care whether they make a great one or when it comes out.

I'll get one, for sure, but I no longer feel the rush as whatever the result, I'm confident they can never match Sosa's sculpt...

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback! really useful!

So I've shortened the neck about 1/2 a centimeter. Not sure it's that obvious on the picture though. I used Wolverine as a template. So, what do you guys think? Enough or not?

How did you shorten the neck on that body??

I didn't shorten the neck, I just drilled deeper into the head with a dremmel.

So Rebelpig, what material did you use for your fortress base?

The largest stage part is Modellers foam board 5mm. its easy to cut, light and strong enough to build structures like this. The 'crystals' at the back are the same, with layers of board on top to create more relief and shape. I added the other short stump crystals using the same method for the base and added relief to the edges of the base too.
When the basic structure was completed I used a self hardening 2 part epoxy clay 'milliput' to lay flat areas onto the front facing panels. I then impressed the 'striations' of the ice with a sharp flat edge.

Now for the 'Blue peter bit' (sorry US guys, google 'Blue peter make' or use Youtube. you'll soon see what I mean). I used 'Aluminium foil' two layers scruched up the flattened out but not enough to loose the texture. This was the glued and folded into and over the crystals.
I used the same teq on the floor parts with the foil more scrunched then flattened, I took it right to the edge and over slightly to give the effect of snow on top of the ice.

It still didn't have that 'snowiness' it needed, so I painted a very thick coat of acrylic on the floor after the first base coat of white, I then sprinked dry sand on top.
Then the whole thing had another thick coat of white, then light ice blue worked in to bring out the detail. Then I dry brushed that whole thing with white to soften this and get that blue ice effect.

For the lights I used super bright white battery led's. the sort that aren't on a string but individual strands from a control box, there for bouquets. They work well as each light can be taken from the central box and implanted in the floor were you want it. The lights I used will give you good 12hrs before they fade.

The figure stand base is secured inside the base of the unit. It has detachable pole, clear acrylic. So I replaced this with a longer 6mm wide acrlic rod that I could cut to a longer length, long enough to achieve a levitaing/fliying pose.

The stand was like this one. Similar to medicoms.

I may make smaller connecting versions for Luthor and Zod. I also had a mad thought to do the Crystal chamber.

I have them all designed in tech drawings, I'd like some backlighting too. I may replace the standing crystals with frosted acrylic. I could then bed a light at the base of each to make them glow. I'ts just finding the time. LOL

Wow Rebelpig, thanks a lot!

That's really helpful! I especially love your leds. I've never tried working with them so I'm not sure how to proceed, but that looks really awesome!

Thanks again so much for the tutorial! I don't know if I'll be able to make a stand as good as yours, but I'll try at least to achieve someting in between yours and Cinemaquette!

The led's are one of the easy bits, its finding the right sort of unit, the one I used has a central battery box with individual cables for each light. It makes them really easy to place anywhere you want.
No wiring or soldering, nothing.
The design for mine was 'ripped off' from the cinemaquette. Best base ever. I wanted my Superman to look like a 1/6 version of that.

do you think the perseus body would be a good stand in for supermans body ,he seems to have good realistic arms and legs his neck looks ok ,not to sure about his chest as im not sure how to remove his chest piece cheers chris

ok so i worked out how remove the out fit without destroying it ,and guess what its a pretty nice built figure ,a little empty in the mid section and hips ,but a little foam padding sorted that out

the good point that i can see is that the neck diameter is smaller and hard and seems a better match sizewise for the fenix sculpt ihe body seems to have just the right amount of mass and sleekness to match reeve build and the strange gappy shoulder joints dont even show through the mattel suit , which i allways thought was good but now think is exelent ,the only down side on the body is it seems not as articulated as some of the bodies some of you guys have used ,but overall im glad i tried it out

ni yes ther pretty nice ,i cant take credit for them though, that goes to a talented if not obsesed chris reeve fan called kris meadows ,i got the parts to make a chris superman back in 1996 i think it was at the superman thing in metropolis il ,the boots are made of strech lycra , and sewn like a sock ,but to be truthfull a little too sock like in fact kris used to picture his figures in snow or cotton wool to hide the feet ,i just added a iner sole to give it a more boot like shape,then glued a sole to the bottom and that was it ,ive tried with no luck to replicate them ,ive got a lady looking at them now with a view to copying them ,if it works out ill let you know

this pretty darn good especially for a first paint up!

the eyes look great except (and this is a personal preference) the white dot on them. I particularly don't like the white dot as to me, it makes it look more like something we'd see on older figures. I've repainted all the eyes on my sideshow figures b/c I truly dislike the white dot. I just let a coat of some high gloss simulate the glossy look of natural eyes rather than the white dot even though that is its purpose.

Yes I understand, and thanks for your kind words, but I did not paint the white dot, that is from the light angle that picture was taken. look at the other picture and you´ll realize. I don´t like the white dots also. And thank you again, really!
