I once had every 1/6 Jack Sparrow, including DX06, and if I could I’d still own them all and still get DX15 too.

I think I have 5.

Sovereign Jack
HT AWE Jack
HT Cannibal Jack
DX06 Jack

... and soon DX15 Jack

Essentially one for each movie.

That’s how I worked it out before, Medicom was Curse, Cannibal for DMC, AWE with the gag telescope for the third film and I specifically painted my hat for DX06 for him to be OST.

With a single figure now, I’m just going for a Best Of look from all 5 movies. Each film has the capacity to display a figure for it uniquely on a shelf.

I appreciate the pics are from different angles, but just trying to make the best of the sculpts. The old head is the first pic. It fits pretty well in the new hair, a tiny bit small, but it works.

I look at that second pic and for some reason thought Kirk Hammet from Metallica.

Here's my take on what happened and this is based on my own views of course.

Pirates of the Caribbean films were coming out right around the launch of 1/6 collecting, Sideshow had some figures but were just getting their Star Wars line off the ground, Hot Toys was new to the game and slowly developing themselves, and Medicom put out a few figures. Medicom was actually the first company to tackle Pirates, beside NECA, and it was a decent figure within the style of Medicom 1/6 at the time, but it left room for improvement.

Then, just as Hot Toys started to turn out more realistic looking figures with more life-like portraits and less Hasbro style ones, they took on Pirates, and we got a take on a more realistic looking Jack, but it still had flaws, a highly questionable likeness, erroneous coat color, and back then HT had only one body with shoulders as broad as Schwarzenegger.

While it was a step up in most regards from Medicom, even then people knew it could be better, as HT had other figures with better likenesses coming, including Will and Elizabeth from Pirates.

So finally, DX06 comes around, by this time HT has a range of bodies and can finally make a Jack with Depp proportions, and years of sculpts and paint jobs to evolve to something way beyond MMS Jack or Medicom, and they delivered a figure beyond expectation, and despite a competitive portrait, the Medicom UU figure was still very much of Medicom quality in every other respect, so DX06 was THE figure, and so close to perfection in so many areas and such a leap beyond what came before, it was hard to think better would be possible, so it got a lot of praise.

Now we have DX15 showing us in what ways it could be better, and the flaws once overlooked are now under a spotlight.

There was a time when it took something like having a figure made by Sideshow and then later by Hot Toys to spawn conversations where something once treasured and praised is now criticized, but with Hot Toys ever pushing their quality, even in a few short years they are able to outdo themselves on something they've done before and pieces that really seemed like they'd never be topped are. Up until DX15 announcement, even years after initial release, you'd still see praise of DX06 as one of HT's finest ever, and for the most part, it still is, other than the portraits, DX15 improves on DX06 but the parts don't strike me as majore leaps and bounds beyond, so those who can only have DX06 still have a very solid figure overall and aren't necessarily missing out on a lot.

Good insight. I guess the best figure out there is only the best until something better comes along. I was beginning to second guess myself keeping my DX06. But the more I think about it the happier I am with it. The DX06 fits his look more of the first three movies. Which are my favorites. I'll happily pass on the DX15.

Now give us Davy Jones 2.0.

The Sovereign Jack (2006) is specifically COTBP. It's not HT... but it has a nostalgia factor... and real hair. :)

Got pics handy, I feel like I saw it back in the day but would love a trip back in time. I can’t remember if I had Medicom before or after I got the NECA 12” AWE, I’m a Sparrow nut, money is my only limit lol.

nice!

Interested in pics of the Sovereign Jack...I've never seen it. Or if I have, I didn't know who made it.

I've got 3 with DX15 being the 4th

  • My own Custom COTBP
  • Custom DMC/AWE (still a WIP that will finish now that certain parts are readily available again) It's going to have a DX vibe with one hairpiece with real hair and swappable faces
  • DX06
  • then DX15

And then I'll have one from every film finally :panic:

Sovereign Studio was a name for production from a custom figure maker, he produced a handful of unique items, like Keaton Batman figures well before HT ever offered them, Jack Sparrow (though not in large numbers if I recall), as well as a custom Indiana Jones Raiders jacket. He ran a shady business and wait times on things were unbearable at times and everything showed up smelling like smoke so he's been long out of the game as far as I know.

Best unboxing video i can only see 1 on YouTube but not in english

The only great one is Curse of the Black Pearl. The other four don't even come close. 3-5 are just straight up bad.
They are not bad. They are good movies, not great, just good.

At least they are better and more entertaining than the Transformers crap. The worst Pirates is better than any Transformers.

thanks but I know of Sovereign Studios and his shady practices :wink1: I should've used better wording though, my bad :slap:

I guess what I meant was that if I had seen the Sovereign Studios Jack, I didn't know it was his as I wasn't aware that he made a run of Jack Sparrow figures. I've only seen/known of his Keaton Bats and Indiana Jones jacket which I believe was hailed as the best Indy jacket for a very ling time.

Only full on custom Sparrows I've seen with real hair are Kojun's COTBP and the Adam Gu+Greggo AWE figure.

All things considered, that's really good especially for the times. You could probably upgrade that with a new coat, boots and sash if you wanted and I bet it would make a world of difference

:lol@ "Some people on this forum weren't even born yet judging from their posts"

I remember I tried using a DMC Zizzle Jack Sparrow figure I got on clearence to customize b/c I couldn't afford the medi. If ppl are laughing at you for the Sovereign studios one, I can only imagine what they'd thing if I had pics at my attempt from back then :lol

Unless people been around a while, they have no idea what we used to love. :lol

The Sovereign figure is no way worth an upgrade -- it is a creature of its time. I like it for the nostalgia -- when 1/6th was just breaking out.

One day I think I might have more fond memories of these old relics than the newer, perfect stuff.
