Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Part of the problem might be that ANH Chewy had problems that could be addressed by doing some quite subtle and "low to moderate risk" modding (lighting painting or pasteling the fur, hair gel, lots of fur futzing etc.) whereas if you look at what Matrix and couple of others did to the TFA Chewy, they essentially totally destroyed the head and rebuilt it because it's so far from being even decent.

That's really something for not just experienced customizers, but also people who can afford to eat the potential loss of the total value of the figure if it doesn't work out (and a I would argue that a couple of TFA Chewy modding efforts I've seen on here didn't improve the head much, and possibly destroyed the resale value of the fig) - people might be too nervous.

I'd also say that none of the modded TFA Chewies I've seen have made it objectively great as a Chewy (ie what the fig should have been from HT) - only an improvement on a very badly conceived head.

I'd be inclined to agree with this. TFA Chewie requires some major surgery just to look decent/passable.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Perhaps, but the ideas have been shown and shared already. Just trying to facilitate finding them for those brave enough to give the mods a shot. Obviously any mod you try is at your own risk. Creating the mod thread won't make anyone try them who feels they shouldn't or can't.

For me personally, I got TFA Chewie with the two pack last week and spent two days trying my best to better him with just the futz. Thought I was close a couple of times, but just can't get it where it needs to be. so I wanted to re-examine the mods to see what I might or might not have the stomach for. But sifting through all the pages and even then not knowing if I've found them all is maddening.

If no one is interested, or if no one thinks this is a reasonable idea I'll drop it...

Sorry, QGF - didn't mean to stick a pin in the idea of a thread, just trying to explain why maybe people aren't too enthused by the idea.

I used those little scissors from a small Swiss Army knife. I did not heat anything up. It seems the plastic they used on this Chewie is really soft. That could be part of what is warping the look in the upper lip area. The the fur is easy to cut of course, but it's also a bit of a mine field with black thread and chunks of glue and netting that the fur is attached too.

This one might have a bit more potential than the ANH figure. I'm no customizer but was able to do a mod, though it's obviously do so at your own risk--it's not like the head can even be purchased parted out. Half the time I was thinking, this isn't so bad, and the other half it was, is this gonna be ****ed?

When the upper lip is adjusted I think he does have a bit more resemblance to Chewie and less Harry from Harry and the Henderson's than the ANH Chewie.

:lol

That's the mindset of the customizer in a nutshell. The challenge of the unknown, the excitement of the inspiration, then staring into the void with reddened, teary eyes (watching a couple of hundred dollar bills fluttering off into the distance.):rotfl

The ANH Chewy was a solid start, but the TFA Chewy is a "shat the bed figure" (as mattingly so eloquently wrote) because it should have been "the" Chewy to have after the stepping stone of the ANH one. The two heads can both be elevated to screen accurate in the hands of a skilled customizer, but it just seems like the ANH one needs much lighter and simpler mods than the mod-with-wrecking-ball approach with the TFA Chewy. It's amazing that even the mouths and eyes on both figs (and the "snout") just don't seem right somehow.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

I'd be inclined to agree with this. TFA Chewie requires some major surgery just to look decent/passable.

I agree, I'm sure HT will release another one for the upcoming movies.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

How do you guys feel about starting a thread on the Star Wars Customs section for the modded TFA Chewie ideas and examples?

It's getting too hard to find the photos and descriptions in the main thread as more of us get these in hand and are ready to try these techniques, IMHO...

If we're game, I think one of the the members who can share their work should start us off.

I know I'd be appreciative!

Honestly, I think if you want a thread for your purposes you should by all means start one, I'm sure folks will contribute once it gets going. I believe there's only about 5 people (faststreets, matrix, mattman, drjedisith, myself) who did mods and posted the results so maybe take the time to dig those out to seed the thread?

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

See, QuiGon is right. It'd be easier to keep track if it was all in one place. :lol

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

If it's not photoshopped, it's how he should have been out of the box.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Yeah that one is modded. It was the first one to be modded if I'm not mistaken. Matrix did an awesome job.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Unfortunately you can put lipstick on a pig but...every time I see an unmodded TFA Chewbacca I think..."$265 down the drain..." every time I see a modded TFA Chewbacca I think "$265 plus an additional $500 worth of time and effort down the drain..." Shame on you Hot Toys!

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

$500 is a bit of a stretch. haha :lol

Ha! Guess I am just thinking of how long it would take me to take that thing apart!

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Ok, the Chewie Mod Thread is open here:

https://www.sideshowcollectors.com/...ns-ep-vii-chewbacca-custom-modifications.html

If you'd like, we can use the new thread for pics and discussion around mods and futzing techniques and examples (we already have Matrix and Spudtrooper mods listed) and leave this thread for everything else TFA Han & Chewie. There's bound to be some overlap, but I don't think anyone will be keeping score. Enjoy...

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

It was intense surgery, and please don't judge that pic of the semi finished version, I will need to spend days finishing him before he looks the way that I hope that he can ( it will probably still look f%#~>^ horrible though):

This is super old, but looking at this are Chewbacca's eyes even blue. In the prototype they were, but they look black here. I hope its just the photo because the really bothers me.

Do you cut more than the fur? The way mattman made it sound is that there was just access fur he kinda took off, but if Im understanding you right you also need to cut the fabric and etc? It looks great though, did you paint the muzzle area with the black, or is that underneath the fur?

No, I think Faststreetsofhongkong was the first to try modding the TFA Chewy. Still interested to see how his effort came out - he never posted final pics.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

My Han Solo arrived yesterday and I was not going to jump on the hype train, but have no choice but to agree with those who feel that this is the best headsculpt to ever come out of Hot Toys. Shockingly good in person! I almost didn't attempt to put the little metal cylinders in his breast pocket after reading about all of the drama but I did and all 3 just fit right in without any resistance. I wonder if this was just a localized issue with a certain batch because it could not have been easier and I am usually really bad with anything short of opening my figures and propping them on their stands.
