Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Dude... just... no. It's so bad... the heads look like they are sculpted out of cheese, not refined, cartoonish. The robes, clunky and unnatural, the hood looked goofy as hell, cheesy rubber boots.. I mean, he had no pants... those old loose Prometheus bodies.. the lost goes on and on

For the record I do that's confidence in hot toys for doing a good robe either that's why I'm in on the yunsil project.

Either your being sarcastic or creating your own delusions. The head sculpt is amazing. It's an awesome figure through and through. You don't even see the boots or trouser area, so who cares? How do you know Ian McDiarmid was even wearing pants? From your logic, shouldn't it also come with underwear and socks as well. From your description, you must have the Hasbro one (or some bad custom). But even the Hasbro one is really good for what it is. The actual Sideshow one (that I own) has a perfect likeness and excellent outfit with perfectly draping poseable hood and sleeves..thanks to the wires. The only slight modification I did was use tiny magnets to pull the robe back to make it look more natural..very simple fix. Also, the body on that one has no issues with loose joints or holding that crazy 'just standing there' Emperor pose (at least with mine). You could put an old action man body on it and you'd never know. Well; I've said my peace on all that.

Han arrived last night. Very impressed with him right out of the box. Working on getting the last cylinder in and some minor futzing. Best likeness of Harrison yet IMO.

The benefits of living in a one-bedroom apartment. Not many options. :lol

I keep posting in the wrong thread today. :gah:

Looking good, drjedisith! Makes such a difference. Get to watch him turn into Chewie in front of your eyes. I took a bit more off (even some of the plastic part above the upper mouth. Then glued the upper mouth to the fur there with super glue. Started messing with adding a little mustache too. Not perfect but far better than what came out of the package.

EDIT: Swapped out photo for one where the bandolier isn't falling off.

Yeah i did the same. I ended up peeling his scalp back and added height to his head. Im thinking of making him a new mouth now lol. Fun project ;)

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

How do you guys feel about starting a thread on the Star Wars Customs section for the modded TFA Chewie ideas and examples?

It's getting too hard to find the photos and descriptions in the main thread as more of us get these in hand and are ready to try these techniques, IMHO...

If we're game, I think one of the the members who can share their work should start us off.

I know I'd be appreciative!

I approve for the selfish reason that I simply have no interest in that chewie figure.

lol well I didn't read through all of that because generally anyone who likes to hurl around insults over toys I figure has got to live a pretty sad life, but skimming and seeing arguments like why wires in sleeves is a GOOD thing makes me think you haven't been in this game very long. But in any case, not that I'll be paying attention but once you get the hot toys emperor like everyone else I'll be laughing.

Hot Toys should send you a rebate check in the mail to refund you for your time and any materials you spent to finish their project for them. It should at least knock $100 off the figure all said and done.

Even from the tiny image in the picture with Howard Chan you can already see the improvement...the Sideshow figure even in the best Sideshow promo pictures looks like it is wearing a giant Hefty trash bag instead of a robe...this character will definitely benefit from its Hot Toys re-do!

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Thanks, Prince! I sort of just went for it, remembering what I'd read from matrix69 and mattman below. I just inserted the brush that Chewie comes with between the upper mouth and the fur and found that it separates really easily. Then just worked on reducing the amount of fur in the upper lip area, which is what is causing the problem (there's so much and the plastic sculpt is soft so it's just pushing the mouth down). The whole time I was doing it I was wondering if I was going to screw the whole thing up. They used dark brown threading to keep the fur in so as you cut to remove some sections those dark threads start appearing. Anyhow, it wasn't hard but I definitely had to be careful in terms of balancing all that.

Here's mattman's:

:duff Thanks, Raymond! I figured the same until I saw what matrix and mattman did with theirs.

Definitely don't have to skin it, but at the end of the day I would much rather have never had to do anything. I got Chewie for a good price under retail which is what allowed me to even consider messing with it.

Yeah, I have to agree that it's crazy that this wasn't an improvement straight out of the box. The color of the fur on ANH is too dark and he has a goofy smile thing going on and sort of looks crosseyed, and then TFA is obviously too orange but that upper lip is the most offensive of all those to me, and I suspect many of us.

TFA Chewie eyes are definitely better than ANH Chewie, body is the same, though head doesn't sit as low. ANH did a better job of the more realistic matted fur on the body whereas this one looks a bit too brushed out, though with product that could be matched.

After working out the upper lip issue the face basically becomes the same as ANH, but a bit better because the eyes (though they're not blue) don't look crosseyed and depending how the mouth ends up that could look a bit better too. The color is lighter, so sort of better, but obviously the figure is too orange overall, even for the actual TFA Chewie. Under the detolf lights it looks like the Lorax color to me. I know my brain has gotten used to the ANH Chewie so that's part of it, but it feels like the case where ANH Chewie is better under the lights and this one is better away from the lights.

Just got Chewie from him and it did not have a shipper. I don't think they include the shippers in Hong Kong. I think that's a Sideshow thing, and all the places that Sideshow supplies to (Europe, Australia, US).

Thanks for the reply, Just wanted to ask what did you cut the fur with? Did you use a knife life mattman, or something else? Also Did you have to head up the mouth with a blowdryer like him, or did you just insert the brush?

Still no takers on this? We could unclutter this thread and also have one place to go for ALL of these Chewie mods if anyone wants to take a few minutes to start it off.

I can put it out there, but I generally think it's a bit lame to start a new thread with no initial content...

Hot toys really shat the bed on this chewie.

Part of the problem might be that ANH Chewy had problems that could be addressed by doing some quite subtle and "low to moderate risk" modding (lighting painting or pasteling the fur, hair gel, lots of fur futzing etc.) whereas if you look at what Matrix and couple of others did to the TFA Chewy, they essentially totally destroyed the head and rebuilt it because it's so far from being even decent.

That's really something for not just experienced customizers, but also people who can afford to eat the potential loss of the total value of the figure if it doesn't work out (and a I would argue that a couple of TFA Chewy modding efforts I've seen on here didn't improve the head much, and possibly destroyed the resale value of the fig) - people might be too nervous.

I'd also say that none of the modded TFA Chewies I've seen have made it objectively great as a Chewy (ie what the fig should have been from HT) - only an improvement on a very badly conceived head.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Perhaps, but the ideas have been shown and shared already. Just trying to facilitate finding them for those brave enough to give the mods a shot. Obviously any mod you try is at your own risk. Creating the mod thread won't make anyone try them who feels they shouldn't or can't.

For me personally, I got TFA Chewie with the two pack last week and spent two days trying my best to better him with just the futz. Thought I was close a couple of times, but just can't get it where it needs to be. so I wanted to re-examine the mods to see what I might or might not have the stomach for. But sifting through all the pages and even then not knowing if I've found them all is maddening.

If no one is interested, or if no one thinks this is a reasonable idea I'll drop it...

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

I would suggest a thread where everyone who bought TFA Chewbacca can share information so that they can put together a class action lawsuit against Hot Toys. I am sure that some shifty Attorney could make a good case for collectors being blind sided and ripped off based upon Hot Toys' previous reputation for making quality action figures that collectors have typically not had to destroy and rebuild at their own expense. Maybe Sideshow could join the suit and claim that photos of Chewbacca with Han hurt Han sales affecting their bottom lines too. :)

Thanks for the reply, Just wanted to ask what did you cut the fur with? Did you use a knife life mattman, or something else? Also Did you have to head up the mouth with a blowdryer like him, or did you just insert the brush?

I used those little scissors from a small Swiss Army knife. I did not heat anything up. It seems the plastic they used on this Chewie is really soft. That could be part of what is warping the look in the upper lip area. The the fur is easy to cut of course, but it's also a bit of a mine field with black thread and chunks of glue and netting that the fur is attached too.

I'd also say that none of the modded TFA Chewies I've seen have made it objectively great as a Chewy (ie what the fig should have been from HT) - only an improvement on a very badly conceived head.

This one might have a bit more potential than the ANH figure. I'm no customizer but was able to do a mod, though it's obviously do so at your own risk--it's not like the head can even be purchased parted out. Half the time I was thinking, this isn't so bad, and the other half it was, is this gonna be ****ed?

When the upper lip is adjusted I think he does have a bit more resemblance to Chewie and less Harry from Harry and the Henderson's than the ANH Chewie.
