All the hate really comes from Raiden taking over the starring role unfortunately. I was on the hate train too, we all were.

It's funny, because I can't think of a better successor to Solid Snake's legacy than Raiden. He's a complete badass, and he's not even living in Snake's shadow. It got me to thinking, that Kojima must have had some incredible things prepared post MGS 2, but we never even gave him a chance. Instead, we clamored for more Snake, so he followed up with the Solid Snake clone known as Big Boss >__>.

In hindsight yes, but his feminine voice and girl body were the big problems with it. But when you take into account where and what his character would become, he's definitely a good successor. But still no one tops Solido Snakuu.

I nearly spat and smashed my newly bought PS2 way back in November 2001. I HATED MGS2. All the hype for this piece of crap? I remember in an issue of OPM, Kojima said that he was waiting all his life to include the themes of MGS2 in a game but since he's forced to make more and more MGS games, that statement got buried somewhere.

MGR to me represents what you can do to salvage such a bloated series and just have fun. Raiden has an infinite amount of possibilities and I'm all for that.

Well, for my money, Raiden's a much more compelling character than Big Bloated Boss. :lol

Raiden's character really can go anywhere, and it would work.

Outside of MGS3, BB had become less and less compelling and interesting. Even in MGS3 though, he's really not anything special outside of the circumstances. The Boss sold the show, not him.

I don't know what passes for a decent physique to you, but I wish I was still in this kind of shape :lol

MGS2 is a masterpiece, albeit one you have to be reasonably mature and informed to understand - I remember loving it from a gameplay perspective when I was younger, but not enjoying the story as much as the first. Then a few years ago I got bored one summer between university years and dug out my old copy - and was blown away by the subtleties of the story, the metanarrative, the themes and ideas being thrown around. It's also terrifying just how prescient some of Kojima's predictions for the direction society would head in have proven to be.

MGS2 was way ahead of its time. I wonder if one day we'll look back on MGS4 the same way?

Well, I know it's for ratings purposes but Raiden doesn't have a peen :lol It's mainly when he wears the Skull Suit is that he has a chick body.

Yeah, yeah. "Phantom Pain" wasn't MGS either.

Fool me once. :lol

I genuinely wish they'd had the balls to release the game as 'The Phantom Pain' by Moby D!ck Studios, and let it be a huge surprise to people that they were actually playing MGSV.

Honestly, I doubt we're gonna look at MGS4 the way we do 2. There's honestly just so much wrong with the story, namely that whole 'old school versus younger generation' idea that has been done to death - look at Red! We've all bashed that game to death, and it's been sometime since it's release, almost 7 years. MGS2 though, I think most people were starting to understand after 7 or so years, and I think now everyone has a true understanding of the game instead of only a partial one.

Big Boss was a little compelling in MGS3 at times, like him being well over his head, and being so conflicted with his beliefs and eventually overcoming it all. The Boss really did steal the show as Pliss said, but then Kojima had to bastardize the poor woman. I really don't want her in Phantom Pain, I really just don't want her bastardized even further. It killed me on the inside when I heard all of that in Peace Walker.

And now look at where that got us. Granted...considering what MGS 2 seemed like at first, it does make sense how all of us acted the way we did. No one really knew about the subtext, or the messages behind it all, along with how ahead of its time some of the gameplay was like. Enemies knowing something was wrong and always checking on things, non-lethal routes, cqc, improved aiming...all since we didn't like Raiden, and how at first the game seemed like MGS1 from a story point, but with Raiden in place of Snake (Who was in the background the whole time)
In hindsight yes, but his feminine voice and girl body were the big problems with it. But when you take into account where and what his character would become, he's definitely a good successor. But still no one tops Solido Snakuu.
Along with problems with his actual character such as Rose, and I totally hated Raiden at first too. I only really found out in 2008 but I Was like "pfft what, no. get out". There's rumors that Raiden was put in some some girls hated playing MGS1 since they didn't want to play as some "old man" (in MGS4, this is justifable) in MGS1 so if that's true...well, goddamn it.

BTW Solid Snake has a better build than Raiden in MGS 1 :lecture look at those muscles (I can't find a good pic, but in Twin Snakes you could grind meat on those abs) Raiden is just really skinny in MGS2 :lol I almost want to reach Solid Snake's peak build just to cosplay him and do him total justice.
If by the slim chance, Kojima or one of his associates finds SSF, I hope they register an account so we can have a long chat with them about our grievances :lol.

MGS 4 should have never happened, it really demoralized Snake's character in the worst possible way. The only games I'm really looking forward to now are the Rising ones.
If Kojima and/or his associates are at a convention near any of us, we should all come to that convention and have a long talk with them about our problems :lol MGS4 was just so bad honestly. I still like MGS3 though, it's great to see from Big Boss's perspective for once, to learn a lot about him. It would have been superb as a one off, it really would have been.

Exactly right. We'll never give MGS4 the credit MGS2 has gotten. MGS2 become more cherished to me within the next couple years after it came out... but the it's been 7 years since MGS4 and I'm not doing the same thing. Although MGS4 is loads better than PW.

PW wasn't that bad to play, honestly - mostly since it was a portable game first and foremost, and portable games do not have the power of consoles (no dual analog sticks, for instance) but MGS4 has no excuse gameplay wise. Story wise...MGS4 was better, at least it had some interesting moments but PW, I'll be real, I had to almost force myself to finish at times. The story I've raged about for many reasons, but I also feel Big Boss wasn't really Big Boss in that game at times, along with other ****** characters.

MGS4...I feel that game needs a total redux, a remake to fix the story and keep in line.

At one point in time, I think all of us hated MGS 2 because we were too young and immature at the time, to really appreciate it. The storyline had so much intrigue, and mystery, it's certainly the most original work in the series.
I was probably one of the few that never really hated Raiden even all those years ago. I was too caught up with all the WTF revelations and the Evangelion-esque tech imagery that it barely crossed my mind that he ended up stealing the protagonist chair from Snake. :lol

I still wish MGS4 retained some of that mystique and creepy atmosphere that the A.I. Patriots had in MGS2. Instead, we get a voiceless organization with Drebin and his hairless monkey as their "secret agent". :monkey4

I only got a problem with the story, the game itself was fine.

Story aside, I personally had tons of problems with a lot of the game design in MGS4. All the little extra features didn't feel rewarding, and it ended up making for a less enjoyable experience in later years that absolutely killed any sense of replay value in my eyes.

Face it, MGS4 wasn't that well thought out, gameplay, design, or story wise. Kojima was developing it under sheer pressure and it shows. There were SO many things wrong with that game and doesn't live up to scrutiny. At all.

Playing MGS1 and 2 again, I'm surprised how well these two games hold up. It's sad that Kojima isn't given a lot of fan feedback about MGS2. It's always MGS3 this, Peace Walker that. If that's what modern fans gravitate to, then that's what Konami will force Kojima to cater to.

Didn't Koji Pro veto some of Kojima's ideas? I wonder what we would of gotten if he didn't come up to any resistance.

:exactly:

Yeah you're right about that. It was the ending and a few more stuff IIRC. Though I'm not sure if I feel the original ending would have saved the game. :dunno
