I don't know if it's genius but it certainly makes more sense IMO. This way peeps would have 3 different display options. If you want to get a little crazy, you can display him with 2 hammers. If you like the original display, you can go with hammer in the right hand and open left hand like we have now. The other option is a closed empty right fist with mjolnir in his left hand. This would take care of the peeps that are not feeling his open left hand (even though I personally like it). What I really like about the hammer in the left hand option is that it gives the statue a whole different feel. Instead of the throwing mjolnir with his right hand vibe, we'd get a Thor that looks like he's summoning lightning with mjolnir in his left hand. It would have been an easy EX to make given their time constraint and we would at least had a legit display option. I can't imagine anyone really wanting to display Thor with a sword. Especially at the expense of not being able to display mjolnir.

Agreed...Thor needs his hammer. The ONLY reason to display him with the sword would be because you could, but never cause it made sense.

Was playing around in Photoshop to see what the EX switch out hands could have looked like. I borrowed the right hand from ARH's Thor, which I notice also have a really similar pose once the hammer hand is switched to the other side. This is what I would have preferred for the EX, I think the pose is perfectly set up for it too....

At $440 it should really come with interchangeable parts like what they did with the Modern Cap PF.
