I drove down to meet Rafael and pick up Sauron today. I must say it was a treat to see his workshop and amazing collection. It was a pleasure talking to him over dinner about his ideas and takes on different projects. Very humble guy and he believes in sharing ideas and inspiring others to try. When I got in the door and saw Sauron on the table, I was blown away at how truly amazing it is person. I kid you not, this repaint is beyond my imagination. Again, I want to say thank you my friend Rafael for taking on this project. I'm a happy camper. :yess:

That's what a $900 statue should look like! Even if the glow on mine is perfect it still won't look as good as that. This was the only shot we had at a 1/4 scale Sauron and this is one of those times where SS should have gone the "less is more" route IMO. If Sauron would have looked like that repaint from the start, it would have been sold out long ago.

Whatever you paid for the re-paint was well worth it. this looks amazing!

I agree with this. It still looks good the way it is but I think a version like this would have pushed it over the top. Although comparing a custom paint job to that of a factory paint job isn't really comparing apples to apples so even if this was originally intended it still wouldn't look as fine as what Rafael did.

Exactly. It's the glow effect that keeps it in the great statue catagory instead of EPIC. That's what makes it frustrating - thinking about what could have been.

Thanks, that would be much appreciated!

The shelf I have Sauron, Morgul Lord & Dark Rider on is 4 feet wide and 12 inches deep. The width is just right and I don't think you would want to go any narrower. The depth is fine for Sauron surprisingly but a little too short for the Morgul Lord and the Dark Rider because I had to twist them a certain way so the base didn't hang over the edge. It's fine but as you can tell from the picture, the name plate for each isn't right at the front.

Thanks for the Info! I may have to re-think this because I don't know if 48" is gonna work. I was really hoping you were gonna say 36".:lol I guess I might have to box up the Dark Rider.

It's epic as is IMO. The paint job on mine is great and I stand by the fact I think this is SS best piece ever. Sure some of the repaints are nice especially any that Jerry V will end up doing but the factory paint I think as a whole came out darn good.

Thats cool, I respect your opinion and I know I'll be happy when I get my Sauron, but I know I will still have some regret though. I'm just not a fan of painting lighting on a 3-D object. To me that's just as pointless as if they were to paint the shadow of Saurons mace onto the base.:dunno Everyone's lighting situation is going to be unique and the Statue should reflect that. I understand that SS was attempting to capture the look of JV's painting, but what works in 2-D isn't necessarily going to translate in 3-D.

You have enough space and money for only one of these epic pieces, either Sauron or Azog on Warg. Which do you chose?

For me it would be Sauron.

I think you'll love Sauron. If it hadn't come out well I agree but most of the ones I've seen came out well of course as is the case with these things some of them did not come out very well. I understand people repainting them though to get them to look the way they want.

I'd go with Sauron. I love The Lord of the Rings more than The Hobbit.

:panic:Don't make me choose between PF Sauron and Azog, that would be like choosing beer or my wife. :lol

Yeah, I know I'm gonna be wowed by Sauron regardless.:thud:

For some people maybe, it looks like it is missing something without it IMO. These repaints are great, and I am waiting to see someone duplicate the effect with lights. I may add some detailing and weathering, but for me the glow is one of the highlights.

I decided to go back and review my initial impression when this was first announced...

Although this is a nice PF, I think it's still too early to tell, but I don't really think this surpasses the Berserker (or Lurtz) for awesomeness. :wave

Although those are both awesome as well, upon further review... I was wrong

Easy, if they were both the same scale and I could only have one, it would be the Weta version. That being said, they're both really nice. :rock

Not so sure about this anymore, the base on the PF is awesome.
