Add on.. i want to be clear. i'm NOT trying to attack, nor argue with you. I'm actualy quite enjoying our conversation, and Am in no way trying to bully, berate, demean, insult, or otherwise mistreat you. i know i've got some strong opinons, and i can come across that way. I also may simply be privy to information you don't have, as for me, the EU WAS my star wars growing up. Born in 82, i missed the theatrical OT, and grew up with the comics, novels and etc. some were great, some were very VERY bad, but to me, THAT was my star wars. THAT, and the films on VHS.

I appreciate your comments and I'm also enjoying the exchange. I don't feel insulted or attacked in any way and I hope you don't, either! :)

What my real point is is this - the current EU is small potatoes for Disney. yes, they have a "story committee" who is going to try to make some sense ou the big, crazy mess which is about to get much bigger and crazier with new films down the pike that happen at the SAME TIME as so much of the EU. I don't think Disney is going to chuck it out of spite or even just out of the ease of a clean slate.

However, when I talk about the film team, I'm talking about not just JJ (whose influence Disney will definitely keep at least somewhat of a leash on, as they have a franchise to protect) but the entire creative AND corporate team behind the films.

Yes, merchandising is MASSIVE and it's why Disney is so interested in the property. Not JUST to make billion dollar grossing films, but to merchandise the ever-loving-heck out of those films.

That said, they DO have a vested interest in trying to make those films at least "good." So my point is that there's no way they are going to tread lightly around EU continuity if it gets in the way of them telling the kind of story they want to tell. That goes for JJ and Kennedy and everyone else they hire now and in the future to make films.

And, while JJ is a "hired gun" in this sense, he also is an extremely powerful writer/director/producer so there's no way his contract doesn't include the ability to at least shape some of the material to his liking. He wouldn't have signed a deal otherwise if he was just going to be told to point and shoot and shut up.

Regarding the book rights, Disney still has to share the publishing haul with whatever the current publishers are. And who knows what those deals are like? Maybe they have already expired and Disney can reprint, say, the Thrawn trilogy with their own publishing imprints. But maybe not. (I honestly don't know, I'm just talking theoreticals.) It's the same situation with Dark Horse. Disney is yanking the license so their own company can publish it. Maybe the current EU publishers have longer contracts on existing EU? I don't have those answers. But, in the abstract, Disney is NOT interested in promoting Star Wars products they don't fully own. (And there will always be SOME elements of Star Wars they don't fully own, as the first film will forever be owned by Fox, for instance.) All that is to say, they don't see the old EU as an important factor in their new plans.

They don't see "the Clone Wars" as an important factor, which is why it's gone, too. Their plan is to forge ahead with products that are 100% theirs and maximize the crap out of them. Yeah, SOME Star Wars books were successful twenty years ago (mostly because they were the first SW books and were novel - no pun intended.) But the revenue for NJO or Thrawn or whatever these days has got to be negligible compared to Disney's plans.

Well put. My apologies, Lance, for coming off as a jerk. Your original post is an unoriginal one and must've been the dozenth one on SSF I've seen regarding the topic. You've gone back and retracted your initial comment and are agreeing with my take on the whole thing. The EU is laying a groundwork and foundation for the state of the galaxy in the Sequel Trilogy. I don't expect much to be tossed. The biggest things that probably will be fixed are Chewie's death, Anakin's death, Jaina going all bonkers with her view of the Force, Jacen becoming a Sith, Jacen killing Mara Jade, and Jaina killing Jacen. That is the NJO and everything that takes place after it. That is some heavy stuff that would really mess up a clean slate for a new trilogy. Everything else? Not really a big deal in my opinion. It was my intention to present silly arguments and show that the entirety of the EU didn't need to be abolished and could naturally carry forward into the Sequel Trilogy without feeling forced. I'm not asking for Thrawn, Xizor, or Kyle Katarn to make appearances. But I do think those characters are all small potatoes when it comes to the big picture of the galaxy and their existence won't affect the story team's vision much. I want the story to take place 30 years after RotJ. I don't want them dwelling on the past aside from maybe a few throw away lines of dialogue. And those throw away lines could be fan service to the more popular EU or just something the writers imagined happening. But they don't need to blatantly contradict the EU just because. That's what a lot of OT purists want.

As for SW being edgy, I don't see it as edgy. BSG was edgy. I have faith if there's issues with the new movies, it won't be all Disney's fault.

No worries!! :)

My point is - I would give up any hope in seeing much of this EU material in the films. I think there's a fair chance there will be Jason and Jania, because Han and Leia having kids is a pretty obvious route to go and having them be the "next generation" of heroes feels like a natural extension. And because there is SO much EU about the twins, I could see someone saying, "Hey, if we're gonna give Han and Leia kids, we might as well give them these names that some fans already know."

However, I wouldn't expect to see ANY of that other stuff in there. I wouldn't expect to see Mara Jade at all or Luke's kids or any of the stories, characters, etc. etc. that comprise most of the "30 years later" timespan. Some overlaps? Sure? An Imperial Remnant? Sure, strong possibility there.

As for the rest - they aren't adapting the books, they're making new movies that are sequels to the old movies. Skipping over the EU, except in a few rare cases where it might be impossible to avoid (like the twins issue.)

Anyway, all this is speculation, of course! But, IMO, it feels logical. I cannot imagine that Kennedy/JJ/Kasdan even know ANYTHING about the EU anyway! I know I sure wouldn't want two dozen different novel writers spread out over twenty odd years to dictate how I was going to approach it.

i get what you're saying. No one is REALISTICLY expecting any moviesto be adapted from the books. they MIGHt do some cgi Conle Wars/ REbbles style movies down the line... MAYBEE. but i kinda doubt that.AT MOST as far as the films go, I'm expecting AT BEST cursory nods here or there.

Night of the Doctor, 5 min doctor who special with Paul Mcgann is aGREAT example. before he drinks the potion that kick-starts his regeneration, the doctor toasts ALL of his companions. and the FIRST one he mentions is Lucy Miller.

and by Siimply mentioning her name, that one second legitimizes her whole existance, and makes all the radio dramas ( which untill then, there was some debate as to whiter or not they were offical) offical and Canon.

You're quite right about Kennedy likely not knowing all the ins and outs of the Fiction, lore and canon. that's not her job. her job is running the emprie. She Hired Someone else to keep track of everything . it's Lieland Chee's job to know everything. He's the keeper of the Holocron.

By extension, Lets assume they ( the story group)want to make the Rogue squadron books, the thrawn Trilogy, and the jedi academy books Part of the new, "Official canon". Now, Star Wars Is ABOUT the skywalkers. the Name is synonomus. Every " trilogy" has had a Skywalker. Yes, Han and Leia have kids, that's expected. but that Gives us Solo's, not skyywalkers. From a buisness standpoint, it makes sense that we will have another generation of skywalkers, for brand recognition.

Luke WAS NOT indoctornated by the jedi order. He's not a Celibate monk. So him having a wife, and a family is not unthinkable.

So lets assume, that JJ's story has Luke married with a wife named Kate, and a son named tim. Han and Leia, in JJ's script are married and have kids named huey dewy and Webby. Additionaly, there is a former pilot from the rebellion era named Bob who is a jedi that teaches at the school luke founded on DAgobah in the script.

The Story group looks at the script and says, all this is great, but we're gonna make some tweaks here, to bring it more in line with thecana we've decided on.

Luke's wife is named Mara jade, and they have a son named Ben. So we're going to insist you make these edits.

Han and Leia had three kids named Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin. WE insist you change these names too

We love the pilot, but there is a guy in the established canon who fits his description, his name is Corran Horn. Se we wantt you to change that name.

also, we'd like you to move the jedi academy off of dagobah, and to the same place the rebels used as their Base in the original movie. it will help tie this film to the original one, which we are desparately trying to do, AND it's where the school already is in the established canon.

Hey, you mind using the Name " Admaral Pallean" as one of your imperial remnant officers? He's an older guy.

Beyond that, We LOVE the story about Blah blah blah. we just want those handfull of changes, the rest of what you're doing is great."

and Just like that, the Rogue squadron books are shown to be part of the offica l story becuase of corran. Thrawn trilogy is legetimized becuase of the twins and Mara, as well as naming an imperial officer Pallean instead of something else, and by making corran a teacher at the acedmy on Yavin IV, they legetimize the jedi academy books. The story that abrams is trying to tell remains unchanged, and the continuity to fill the gap of 30 years since ROTJ is preserved.

in fact... i think those sets of books over about 8-10 years all together.

all in all, i THINK you and I re on the same wavelength.

I want to see more Aliens in this line. We only have Greedo. There should be more

You've got Jabba and Chewbacca coming up, and I'd personally love to see a hammerhead in some form (if they released the Jedi Hammerhead from the first Clone Wars mini-series, I might even ***** myself with glee)

it's people not being patinet that's causing that. stop buying from scalpers, they toys will become plentiful at retail.
This. Though I have to say Boba Fett all army builders and Vader should be repacked at least once.

I'd love that too but to be honest I don't care for many OT aliens at all. Not relevant enough. I'd love to see Kit Fisto and Ayla Secura in 6" scale. But the line apparently will focus mostly on OT so I don't expect that happening.

The top nr 1 alien must have in this line is easily Yoda now that Chewie is here. And that's pretty much the only other OT Alien I'd buy I think.

Re: Hasbro legends 6" sw figures

Iknow my Target has wave 3 but they wont put them out until all the Greedos are gone. What the heck!!

I worked for target for ten years and I agree. Normally, we allowed to look for people if they ask. Not only that but we they can search other stores too.

Also, Target is big into keeping the pegs full, so not sure why they wouldn't fill them just because Greedos are still hanging there.
